michaela's actions
Wildlife
Use Reusable Bags
Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals. If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Connect While Social Distancing
I will connect with at least 3 person/people a day through phone call or video chat to support mine and other’s mental and emotional health during this challenging time.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Use Muscle Power
I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips, and I will only use muscle-powered transportation for all other trips.
Forests
Use a Reusable Mug
If possible, I will avoid sending 1 disposable cup(s) to the landfill each day by using a reusable mug.
Oceans
Smart Seafood Choices
I will visit seafoodwatch.org or download the app and commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean.
Fresh Water
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 3 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlife Use Reusable BagsWhat do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?
michaela folcik 4/13/2020 2:04 PMIf I am in a situation of needing a bag to carry my items, but if I did not have a reusable bag I would most likely carry everything out in a cart so I wouldn't hurt the environment by accepting a plastic bag. I generally am not in that position often because my roommates and I use the reusable bags when shopping. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONOceans Smart Seafood ChoicesMany states and countries have advisories on eating fish. Find out what is advised for your region. Do you think your diet choices fall within these guidelines? What steps do you need to take to make sure that they do?
michaela folcik 4/13/2020 2:01 PMIn my region, the main advisories are for Fish Consumption Advisories to periodically published to alert consumers about the possibility of chemically contaminated fish in Florida waters. They inform the public on the potential health risks of specific fish. I don't eat that much fish so I don't have to worry about my diet too much in regard to the advisories on eating fish, I just think its important to have some education on this. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONForests Use a Reusable MugMaybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reusable one, but it's just hard to make the switch. What stands in your way of making this a habit? By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?
michaela folcik 4/13/2020 1:56 PMI think what stands in my way is that I like to go out to Starbucks or Dunkin to get coffee and they only use the single use coffee cups. Recently, I've been making my own coffee instead since I have access to my own reusable cups. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Connect While Social DistancingHow does connecting with others help your own mental and emotional health? How can it help support others?
michaela folcik 4/13/2020 1:53 PMConnecting with others reminds me that I am not alone entirely. It's almost like being together when you can't be together. Just being there for people and having simple conversations with people you love and care about can make your day that much better. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Use Muscle PowerHow do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience or enjoyment differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?
michaela folcik 4/13/2020 1:51 PMTransportation affects my engagement within my community because a lot of places I go are not of walking or biking distance, so transportation does make my life more convenient. I think it takes away from me living in the moment and stopping to look and appreciate what's around me.
