Myles's actions
Wildlife
Use Reusable Bags
Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals. If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.
People
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 40 minute(s) each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside that follows CDC guidelines for preventing disease spread.
Forests
Use a Reusable Mug
If possible, I will avoid sending 1 disposable cup(s) to the landfill each day by using a reusable mug.
Fresh Water
Dishwasher Efficiency
I will scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading into the dishwasher and only run the dishwasher when it’s full.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Connect While Social Distancing
I will connect with at least 5 person/people a day through phone call or video chat to support mine and other’s mental and emotional health during this challenging time.
Oceans
Smart Seafood Choices
I will visit seafoodwatch.org or download the app and commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean.
Wildlife
Research a Wild Animal
I will spend at least 40 minutes learning about a wild animal I find interesting, including their life cycle, habitat, ecosystem functions, and interactions with humans (if any!).
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlife Research a Wild AnimalWhat interesting facts did you learn about the animal you researched? What are some of your favorite things about this animal?
Myles Gerson 4/15/2020 8:51 AMAnimals have always interested me and I wish I could have seen some of the prehistoric animals because they were very different than many species now. I think it is very cool how they have evolved and become less dangerous but it would have been cool to see a dinosaur. In the animal kingdom life is more about survival than anything else which is very different from what humans experience. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Connect While Social DistancingHow does connecting with others help your own mental and emotional health? How can it help support others?
Myles Gerson 4/14/2020 11:02 AMConnecting with others helps me feel more supported and less alone. It also helps with my boredom and reminds me that there is a world outside. Communicating with other humans is a very normal thing and it is very weird when there isn't a lot of interaction. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFresh Water Dishwasher EfficiencyHow can your region/household prepare for changing water situations in order to become more resilient?
Myles Gerson 4/14/2020 8:01 AMI don't know the most about Asheville's water system but I think we should have a certain amount of water stored and easily accessible. We could also have a system which automatically turns off all sprinklers, hoses, water fountains, at a certain time (night). -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPeople Spend Time OutsideRachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?
Myles Gerson 4/14/2020 7:44 AMYes I would agree with that statement. I believe that it is very important to spend time in nature and experience the natural world around us because we all live on the same planet together. I think people who spend more time outside are less stressed than those who don't. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlife Use Reusable BagsWhat do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?
Myles Gerson 4/14/2020 7:08 AMOften times I will need a bag when I go grocery shopping. Most of the time I have reusable bags in the car but sometimes I will have to carry items out in my hands. I don't really have a system other than leaving bags in the car, but this is effective most of the time. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONForests Use a Reusable MugMaybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reusable one, but it's just hard to make the switch. What stands in your way of making this a habit? By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?
Myles Gerson 4/14/2020 6:46 AMI honesty don't think it is that hard to switch cups if you already have a mug but it would be harder to do without owning one. It makes me feel good to know that I am doing something good for the planet. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONOceans Smart Seafood ChoicesMany states and countries have advisories on eating fish. Find out what is advised for your region. Do you think your diet choices fall within these guidelines? What steps do you need to take to make sure that they do?
Myles Gerson 4/01/2020 1:18 PMYes my diet is fairly consistent with the NC Fish consumption advisories, though I don't usually eat fish.
