Compost Food Waste
I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to the landfill each day by composting my food or learning how to.

Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Carol Getaz 4/29/2020 8:00 PMI felt this years challenge was quite a challenge indeed, however it felt good to do it again and see how we can all always improve no matter what happens. Ecology has to be put to the front scene: Pollution and greenhouse gas emissions have fallen across continents in a few months.
"It’s safe to say that no one would have wanted for emissions to be lowered this way. Covid-19 has taken a grim global toll on lives, health services, jobs and mental health. But, if anything, it has also shown the difference that communities can make when they look out for each other – and that’s one lesson that could be invaluable in dealing with climate change" said Martha Henriques, BBC.com

Carol Getaz 4/23/2020 8:19 PMWe aslos watched Dream Big and it was quite inspiring for our kids! It made them think of what they want to do "later" and opened so many great discussions! We also wanted to watch the pollinators movie but missed the date! -
Carol Getaz 4/22/2020 7:07 PMToday we wrote a letter to Mother Earth, watched a few talks about the history of Earth Day and had so many lively discussions! We walked to the post office to get our mail, meaning we did not use our car at all today... like most of the days now... And we watch our garden slowly grow under the green houses despite the cold weather! -
Carol Getaz 4/20/2020 6:55 PMEarth Day is approaching... Wondering how everyone is going to celebrate mother earth... For now she gets a break, who would have ever imagined that, yes, it was possible ! -
Carol Getaz 4/17/2020 6:48 PMToday Milan told us that with his green search engine we installed on his device, Lilo, he was able to finance his "drops of water" to social and environmental projects. I remembered installing the engine search but didn't realize how much he uses his screen now having virtual learning ! Well done! -
Carol Getaz 4/07/2020 7:08 PMToday was such a lovely sunny & warm day! Perfect day to plant outside what we started inside few days ago... We should ALL stay home and help flatten that curve... Gardening will even contribute to feed you and your family! Even if you have a little balcony! It's worth trying it, and so satisfying when you pick that fresh radish, lettuce, arugula, carrot... and much more! But staying home is definitely what we all need to do right now.

Carol Getaz 4/06/2020 7:57 PMTaking advantage of being outside, gardening, biking and meeting people who are slowing down due to the Pandemia and walking... We never saw that many people walking in our neighborhood! (Keeping the social distancing of course). We feel it brings so much humanity, everybody waving at each other , smiling, we're all in this together! -
Carol Getaz 4/02/2020 8:33 PMOur boys are so conscious about this challenge! Today when we were making our own granola, Milan reminded me to mention that in the challenge! And making our own bread! yes we feel empowered by being able to make food from scratch (well almost from scratch...) On another positive aspect of being home alltogether ! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Compost Food WasteNew to composting? Be sure to check out the action resource links to learn tips and more about it. As you transition from throwing food away to composting, what do you notice about how much you are tossing? How will you use your compost once it is ready?
Carol Getaz 4/01/2020 7:38 PMLiving now in the country is actually so easy to compost! I realize that I encourage many friends to do it - without pushing it - and it works! And sharing our success or simply our questions together is so helpful! Being able to use the soil for the veggie garden is pure joy, such a sense of satisfaction ! However I"m aware we always can do better! I bought a small bag of soil to start my seeds recently and felt terrible not using my compost as I was definitely too lazy to use my compost... Ha I will keep it for the veggie garden when it gets warmer! Nobody's perfect! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Spend Time OutsideRachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?
Carol Getaz 4/01/2020 7:28 PMThese days we're so thankful to be able to go out and enjoy going outside, gardening... Especially after rainy days! This pandemic shows us worldwide the importance of being in contact with nature, because it is healing, relaxing and when we can't enjoy it, we feel depressed and anxious.
