Arwen's actions
People
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 40 minute(s) each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside that follows CDC guidelines for preventing disease spread.
People
Connect While Social Distancing
I will connect with at least 1 person/people a day through phone call or video chat to support mine and other’s mental and emotional health during this challenging time.
Climate
Use Muscle Power
I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips, and I will only use muscle-powered transportation for all other trips.
Oceans
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When marine wildlife ingest plastic, they have a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Fresh Water
Dishwasher Efficiency
I will scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading into the dishwasher and only run the dishwasher when it’s full.
Wildlife
Support Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators, including monarch butterflies, to produce fruit. I will spend 30 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.
Wildlife
Research a Wild Animal
I will spend at least 30 minutes learning about a wild animal I find interesting, including their life cycle, habitat, ecosystem functions, and interactions with humans (if any!).
Climate
Choose LED Bulbs
I will replace 4 incandescent lightbulb(s) with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
Forests
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area while following CDC guidelines for social distancing.
Food
Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
I will spend at least 30 minutes learning how to differentiate between sell by, use by, and best by dates.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Arwen Giordano 4/26/2020 6:08 PMThe heavy rain yesterday made being outside today even more enjoyable. Everything seemed so much more alive! -
Arwen Giordano 4/21/2020 11:46 AMOur cat will drink out of any open cup, so we have to use lids and straws. We invested reusable silicone and/or plastic straws, and they work great. No need for straws that just get thrown away. Even better our cups now can go anywhere, so there's less need for any purchasing of "disposable" drinks while we are out. -
Arwen Giordano 4/21/2020 11:44 AMWe've been working on making our backyard a fun place during this pandemic. One of our additions is a badminton net, and our youngest has us out there for hours playing every day.-

REFLECTION QUESTIONPeople Spend Time OutsideRachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?
Arwen Giordano 4/21/2020 11:42 AMI think that being outside is very important. Whenever there is a stressor in life, just taking a walk can help ease it. Sitting on a beach or under a tree relaxes you better than anything else can. People who hole themselves up inside, tend to miss out on simple things that bring joy. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPeople Connect While Social DistancingHow does connecting with others help your own mental and emotional health? How can it help support others?
Arwen Giordano 4/11/2020 1:13 PMNot much for me, I dislike video chatting. My mother, in FL, really enjoyed being able to see me, and it made her feel less lonely. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate Use Muscle PowerHow do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience or enjoyment differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?
Arwen Giordano 4/08/2020 3:04 PMWhen I walk places, I have a better chance of meeting neighbors. I'll admit driving is easier, quicker and not as hot. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONOceans Say No to Plastic StrawsWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Arwen Giordano 4/07/2020 12:50 PMTypically it is only straws when we go out, because I really hate drinking out of glasses. I can start taking my own though and washing them at home. I bring my own cups places and my own bags. Produce bags are a little harder. I don't get them for most things, but sometimes I do, and I need to find a good substitute that's easy to clean and reuse. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFresh Water Dishwasher EfficiencyHow can your region/household prepare for changing water situations in order to become more resilient?
Arwen Giordano 4/07/2020 12:47 PMEveryone needs to think about what is important. Stop watering our lawns, it's ok if they brown a little. Take shorter showers, or smarter showers. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlife Research a Wild AnimalWhat interesting facts did you learn about the animal you researched? What are some of your favorite things about this animal?
Arwen Giordano 4/05/2020 2:45 PMThis weekend there were White Pelicans at Lake Bloomington. After we drove up and saw them, we wanted to learn more about them. They migrate every year from Florida to Lake Michigan. Both parents stay together and incubate the babies. They don't have to dive in the water to get their fish, but just scoop it up. Our fun fact was that it can hold up to 3 gallons of water in its bill! They aren't endangered and a group of them is called a squadron. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlife Support PollinatorsWhy is it important to take care of pollinators?
Arwen Giordano 4/04/2020 3:10 PMPlants need pollination, crops need pollination. 90% of the world's flowering plants are helped by pollinators. Bees are especially important as they are always on the hunt for pollen and go from flower to flower, pollinating along the way. I'm allergic to bee's yet we still plant for them in our yard. Today, we started by planting some in little pots on our deck to grow, and we will transfer them to the ground once the frost threat is over.
