Ava's actions
Fresh Water
Conserve Toilet Water
I will save up to 12 gallons (45 L) of water a day by flushing only when necessary.
Forests
Forest-Friendly Foods
I will replace or remove the palm oil, coffee, and cocoa products in my current diet that are known to contribute to deforestation.
Climate
Stay on the Ground
Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).
Food
Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
I will spend at least 5 minutes learning how to differentiate between sell by, use by, and best by dates.
Wildlife
Support Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators, including monarch butterflies, to produce fruit. I will spend 10 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.
Fresh Water
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 2 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Forests
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area while following CDC guidelines for social distancing.
Climate
Choose LED Bulbs
I will replace 3 incandescent lightbulb(s) with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
Wildlife
Research Benefits of Biodiversity
I will spend at least 5 minutes researching how biodiversity positively impacts our world and how the loss of biodiversity harms it.
Oceans
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When marine wildlife ingest plastic, they have a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 2 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Oceans
Learn about Our Oceans
I will spend at least 10 minutes learning about how our oceans support life on Earth by producing oxygen, regulating climate, and providing habitat, food, and jobs.
Wildlife
Research a Wild Animal
I will spend at least 10 minutes learning about a wild animal I find interesting, including their life cycle, habitat, ecosystem functions, and interactions with humans (if any!).
Forests
Use a Reusable Mug
If possible, I will avoid sending 1 disposable cup(s) to the landfill each day by using a reusable mug.
People
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 25 minute(s) each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside that follows CDC guidelines for preventing disease spread.
Action Track: Earth Day Together!
Earth Day Action: Research and Support Local Organizations
I will spend 10 minutes researching local organizations and businesses in my community, then support one of them by writing a testimonial or positive review, ordering curbside, making a donation to my favorite nonprofit, or supporting them in another way.

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Earth Day Together! Earth Day Action: Research and Support Local OrganizationsWhy is it important to support local organizations and businesses? How does it help to build a more resilient community?
Ava Goddard 4/21/2020 12:30 PMIt is important to support local organizations and businesses because they may give their money to people/animals/things in need or support those things that need support. Poorly worded, sorry. It helps to build a more resilient community by coming together and supporting/helping shops and places that need help and making everyone stronger. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPeople Spend Time OutsideRachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?
Ava Goddard 4/19/2020 5:13 PMI guess that rings true for me in some ways. I do like to spend time outside sometimes but I don't think it changes me in any way. The implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors brings a culture that doesn't have much scial skills and people that are really pale. This means that since they won't be outside and will just be in their houses we won't talk to people other than their family. ANd since they are inside they would be as pale as a ghost. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate Stay on the GroundWhat was your process like for restructuring your trip? How can you avoid more air travel in the future?
Ava Goddard 4/17/2020 12:06 PMMy process for restructuring was super simple because the trip is not far at all and we drive everytime. You can aviod air travel in the future by finding ways to drive. Even though driving may cost more (I don't know how much planes cost) it would be way more beneficial in the long run and maybe more fun. Also, flying TERRIFIES me so I will not be going on a plane anytime soon. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFresh Water Conserve Toilet WaterWhat would a sustainable water future in your region look like? What needs to change?
Ava Goddard 4/15/2020 12:02 PMA sustainable water future in my area would look like good water for everyone and having enough water for everyone. What needs to change is maybe what state/government officials are doing and making sure that everyone has good water. What also needs to change is maybe the price for water bills and to make sure that water is clean. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONForests Explore My AreaHow can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place?
Ava Goddard 4/14/2020 1:26 PMSpending more time outdoors can enhance your sense of place by knowing where you are at all times so you won't be lost or confused of where you are. Also, spending more times outdoors could make you more aware of your surroundings because you are away from technology so when you are away from it you can pay attention to other things around you. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONForests Forest-Friendly FoodsHow difficult or easy was it to change your diet?
Ava Goddard 4/13/2020 3:12 PMThis was actually pretty easy for me personally because I already don't drink coffee. I don't think I use anything with palm oil to my knowledge, And I don't eat or drink much with cocoa products on the daily I don't think. I could see how it could be hard for some people becasue I know some of the things can be addictive and hard to stop using. But overall it was easy for me -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlife Research Benefits of BiodiversityHow can you encourage biodiversity by your own actions?
Ava Goddard 4/11/2020 9:50 AMYou can encouragae biodiversity by supporting the birds, mammals, reptiles and other animals that live at or near your neighborhood. Also, you could bring more biodiversity by leaving out food, water, and homes for them. And you could help clean up different habitats like beaches and forrests. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate Choose LED BulbsChanging lightbulbs is an excellent first step toward energy efficiency! In what other ways can you exercise your civic duty to protect the environment and reduce carbon emissions?
Ava Goddard 4/10/2020 3:48 PMOther ways I could protect the environment and reduce carbon emissions could be by driving less and walking if I can or carpooling when need be. Also, we could use more reusable products like reusable bags for the grocery store and reusable cups/mugs. And to just turn off the lights when your not in a room or when the lights aren't needed. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlife Support PollinatorsWhy is it important to take care of pollinators?
Ava Goddard 4/09/2020 8:14 AMIt is important to take care of pollinators because they are the ones who create and maintain habitats and foods that some animals depend on. Also, "They facilitate the reproduction in 90% of the world’s flowering plants." They give us some of the most beautiful flowers. We need them because if the pollinators become extinct all of the flowers and habitats that humans and animals depend on will be gone. So we need them, even if we're not a fan of them, we need them. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONForests Use a Reusable MugMaybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reusable one, but it's just hard to make the switch. What stands in your way of making this a habit? By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?
Ava Goddard 4/09/2020 7:49 AMWhat would stand in my way of making that a habit would be probably forgeting a reuseable cup. Or bringing the wrong cup/ being embarrassed to bring a cup. But knowing that I would be making a difference would help me overcome the challenges and deal with it.
