Summer's actions
Action Track: Earth Day Together!
Earth Day Action: Research and Support Local Organizations
I will spend 20 minutes researching local organizations and businesses in my community, then support one of them by writing a testimonial or positive review, ordering curbside, making a donation to my favorite nonprofit, or supporting them in another way.
Oceans
Support Organic Growing Methods
I will buy organic cotton and foods grown without the use of synthetic nitrogen fertilizers.
Climate
Stay on the Ground
Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).
People
Volunteer in my Community
I will volunteer 1 hour(s) in my community helping people who are most at need right now, including elderly and immunocompromised people, people without childcare, and people whose jobs have been affected by social distancing measures.
Climate
Choose Renewable Energy or Purchase Renewable Energy Credits
I will sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option. If my utility does not offer one, I will purchase Renewable Energy Credits to match my usage.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Research Benefits of Biodiversity
I will spend at least 7 minutes researching how biodiversity positively impacts our world and how the loss of biodiversity harms it.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Support A Sharing Economy
To reduce my consumption and waste and support my community, I will create or support a sharing economy with family, friends, and neighbors.
Food
Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
I will watch 1 documentary(ies) about food sovereignty: the right of local peoples to control their own food systems including markets, ecological resources, food cultures and production methods.
Food
Reduce Animal Products
I will enjoy 2 meatless meal(s) and/or 0 vegan meal(s) each day of the challenge.
Food
Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
I will spend at least 15 minutes learning how to differentiate between sell by, use by, and best by dates.
Fresh Water
Water-Friendly Beauty Products
Avoid beauty products with micro beads or harsh chemicals that will feed into the ground and your water supply.
Action Track: Earth Day Together!
Earth Day Action: Share Eco Tips
Through social media or on the Earth Day Ecochallenge feed, I will share my favorite environmentally friendly habit with my friends, even if it’s not an Earth Day action.
Wildlife
Research a Wild Animal
I will spend at least 15 minutes learning about a wild animal I find interesting, including their life cycle, habitat, ecosystem functions, and interactions with humans (if any!).
Oceans
Advocate For More Packaging Options
Plastic packaging can clog our water ways and the stomachs of sea creatures. I will advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, markets, at work, or on campus.
Climate
Use Muscle Power
I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips, and I will only use muscle-powered transportation for all other trips.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Summer Greenfield 4/30/2020 8:59 PMThis was my first time participating in EcoChallenge. I really enjoyed it. It kept me accountable for continuous learning efforts and my daily actions. I love the site's use of stats and their overall correlation of information gathered--it really speaks to the power of data visualization. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate Use Muscle PowerHow do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience or enjoyment differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?
Summer Greenfield 4/30/2020 3:43 AMToday I took steps to reduce my carbon footprint. I chose to reduce my greenhouse gas emissions by refuse to drive my car and opting to cycle to and from the gym.

Summer Greenfield 4/23/2020 1:42 AMI learned to decrease packaging via Amazon orders by consolidating orders and scheduling a single delivery date using the “Amazon day” program available to Prime members. This prevents receiving several individual and unnecessary shipments/boxes.
