Close the HVAC vents in rooms you are not using to channel the air into the rooms where you are working.

Turn down your thermostat in the winter.  Invest in a good robe and slippers!  Use a space heater in areas where the family is gathered rather than run the furnace to heat the whole house.

What would a sustainable water future in your region look like? What needs to change?

I'm curious about this question.  I grew up in a water-scarce environment in Colorado and grew up aware of the need to conserve water.  Living less than a mile from Lake Michigan, the source of our drinking water, I feel that our community is less aware of water conservation.  I am aware of the need to keep our water clean by preventing pollution and contamination from getting into our waterways and lakes.

How can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place?

Spending time outdoors allows you to appreciate the beauty and many layers of life in the ecosystem.  When we visited the forest preserve we observed plants, animals, and the weather and how they were relating to each other.  This encouraged us to be present in the moment in order to observe what was going on around us.  This mindfulness enhances our sense of place and makes us feel more attune to our bodies and our environment.

What environmentally friendly habit have you most recently implemented? How do you ensure that you are successful in creating or changing a habit?

I am woking on increasing my purchases from local businesses.  This has been particularly important to me during the Covid situation.  Though I tried to shop locally before this time, I did not feel the urgency I do now.  To be successful in this, I am researching local businesses where I can find things that I regularly purchase and learning about their ordering procedures so that when I need something I can easily get it instead of relying on the ease of Amazon or other online-only sellers.  I believe the way to start and continue a new habit is to be educated, to be clear about your goal and declare it to someone else, and provide yourself positive feelings when you are successful in carrying out your goal. A little "yay, me!" goes a long way.

Why is it important to support local organizations and businesses? How does it help to build a more resilient community?

When we support local businesses, we are supporting the people who own and work for those businesses who are also members of our community.  This feeds our community by allowing our purchases to support the lifestyles of those with whom we live.  Local businesses also often attract people to move to our community.  Additionally they often directly invest in our neighborhoods by supporting sports teams and other events.  Shopping locally also cuts down on fossil fuel emissions by decreasing shipping and packaging.  Beyond that, shopping at a store in person fosters connections and relationships which are good for our emotional health!

How can your region/household prepare for changing water situations in order to become more resilient?

We can shorten the length of our showers; when possible, remove small dirt from our clothes rather than launder the whole garment; and continue to use a water filter, rather than purchase filtered water. Additionally, we can transition our yard toward native species that are drought-resistant to decrease landscape watering.
