Allison's actions
Climate
Use Muscle Power
I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips, and I will only use muscle-powered transportation for all other trips.
Fresh Water
Conserve Toilet Water
I will save up to 12 gallons (45 L) of water a day by flushing only when necessary.
Fresh Water
Dishwasher Efficiency
I will scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading into the dishwasher and only run the dishwasher when it’s full.
Action Track: Earth Day Together!
Earth Day Action: Share Eco Tips
Through social media or on the Earth Day Ecochallenge feed, I will share my favorite environmentally friendly habit with my friends, even if it’s not an Earth Day action.
Action Track: Earth Day Together!
Earth Day Action: Research and Support Local Organizations
I will spend 30 minutes researching local organizations and businesses in my community, then support one of them by writing a testimonial or positive review, ordering curbside, making a donation to my favorite nonprofit, or supporting them in another way.
Forests
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area while following CDC guidelines for social distancing.

Allison Greer 4/26/2020 6:54 PMTurn down your thermostat in the winter. Invest in a good robe and slippers! Use a space heater in areas where the family is gathered rather than run the furnace to heat the whole house. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFresh Water Conserve Toilet WaterWhat would a sustainable water future in your region look like? What needs to change?
Allison Greer 4/26/2020 6:40 PMI'm curious about this question. I grew up in a water-scarce environment in Colorado and grew up aware of the need to conserve water. Living less than a mile from Lake Michigan, the source of our drinking water, I feel that our community is less aware of water conservation. I am aware of the need to keep our water clean by preventing pollution and contamination from getting into our waterways and lakes. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONForests Explore My AreaHow can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place?
Allison Greer 4/26/2020 6:36 PMSpending time outdoors allows you to appreciate the beauty and many layers of life in the ecosystem. When we visited the forest preserve we observed plants, animals, and the weather and how they were relating to each other. This encouraged us to be present in the moment in order to observe what was going on around us. This mindfulness enhances our sense of place and makes us feel more attune to our bodies and our environment. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Earth Day Together! Earth Day Action: Share Eco TipsWhat environmentally friendly habit have you most recently implemented? How do you ensure that you are successful in creating or changing a habit?
Allison Greer 4/25/2020 9:42 AMI am woking on increasing my purchases from local businesses. This has been particularly important to me during the Covid situation. Though I tried to shop locally before this time, I did not feel the urgency I do now. To be successful in this, I am researching local businesses where I can find things that I regularly purchase and learning about their ordering procedures so that when I need something I can easily get it instead of relying on the ease of Amazon or other online-only sellers. I believe the way to start and continue a new habit is to be educated, to be clear about your goal and declare it to someone else, and provide yourself positive feelings when you are successful in carrying out your goal. A little "yay, me!" goes a long way. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Earth Day Together! Earth Day Action: Research and Support Local OrganizationsWhy is it important to support local organizations and businesses? How does it help to build a more resilient community?
Allison Greer 4/25/2020 9:39 AMWhen we support local businesses, we are supporting the people who own and work for those businesses who are also members of our community. This feeds our community by allowing our purchases to support the lifestyles of those with whom we live. Local businesses also often attract people to move to our community. Additionally they often directly invest in our neighborhoods by supporting sports teams and other events. Shopping locally also cuts down on fossil fuel emissions by decreasing shipping and packaging. Beyond that, shopping at a store in person fosters connections and relationships which are good for our emotional health! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFresh Water Dishwasher EfficiencyHow can your region/household prepare for changing water situations in order to become more resilient?
Allison Greer 4/25/2020 8:48 AMWe can shorten the length of our showers; when possible, remove small dirt from our clothes rather than launder the whole garment; and continue to use a water filter, rather than purchase filtered water. Additionally, we can transition our yard toward native species that are drought-resistant to decrease landscape watering.
