Shaun's actions
Forests
Plant Trees
I will plant 3 native tree(s) in my community, public parks, or backyard.
Climate
Choose LED Bulbs
I will replace 20 incandescent lightbulb(s) with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
Wildlife
Leave No Trace
I will respect and protect biotic communities by practicing the seven principles of Leave No Trace when doing nature activities alone or with family and friends.
Fresh Water
Dishwasher Efficiency
I will scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading into the dishwasher and only run the dishwasher when it’s full.
Wildlife
Research a Wild Animal
I will spend at least 180 minutes learning about a wild animal I find interesting, including their life cycle, habitat, ecosystem functions, and interactions with humans (if any!).
Climate
Choose Renewable Energy or Purchase Renewable Energy Credits
I will sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option. If my utility does not offer one, I will purchase Renewable Energy Credits to match my usage.
Food
Weekly Meal Planning
I will reduce food waste and save money by prepping for 2 meal(s) each day, only buying the ingredients I need.
Food
Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
I will spend at least 30 minutes learning how to differentiate between sell by, use by, and best by dates.
Fresh Water
Eco-friendly Gardening
I will plant native species, landscape with water-efficient plants, and use eco-friendly fertilizers.
Fresh Water
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 1 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
People
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 3 piece(s) of litter each day while following the CDC’s current guidelines for prevention of disease transfer.
Wildlife
Seek Alternative Gifts and Souvenirs
Bringing home unique souvenirs from trips you’ve enjoyed is meaningful, and giving people unique gifts from other places is fun. Seek souvenirs and gifts that support local communities and do not cause harm to the environment or wildlife.
Wildlife
Research Benefits of Biodiversity
I will spend at least 30 minutes researching how biodiversity positively impacts our world and how the loss of biodiversity harms it.
Wildlife
Support Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators, including monarch butterflies, to produce fruit. I will spend 30 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.
People
Earth Day Action: Share Eco Tips
Through social media or on the Earth Day Ecochallenge feed, I will share my favorite environmentally friendly habit with my friends, even if it’s not an Earth Day action.

Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

Shaun Guild 4/30/2020 7:45 AMPlan on taking a walk mid day with my kids to help pick up trash after the storms we've had. Should be a good time! -
Shaun Guild 4/29/2020 9:35 AMWith having chickens I'm looking at composting at the house so I don't need to get fertilizer from the store. More to come there..... -
Shaun Guild 4/29/2020 9:33 AMChallenges are going well, upon research I found out that Polywood makes their product out recycled material. I chose to buy from them because of that. -
Shaun Guild 4/24/2020 7:24 AMOur family started to watch Dolphin reef and have plans this weekend to watch the new documentary with Jane Goodall. My daughter has been learning about Jane Goodall through school e-learning, so she's excited to watch. -
Shaun Guild 4/23/2020 9:04 AMToday I was able to help a few families by donating our chickens eggs. It was a good opportunity to bring up some tips on changing the carbon footprint people make with some of my neighbors. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPeople Earth Day Action: Share Eco TipsWhat environmentally friendly habit have you most recently implemented? How do you ensure that you are successful in creating or changing a habit?
Shaun Guild 4/23/2020 7:40 AMIt's being really aware of what is an isn't recyclable. We ensure all things that would compromise a recyclable item have been removed out of the recycle bin so it doesn't contaminate the item and make it all not recyclable. We've added a same size recycle "trash can" next to our actual trash can in the house to promote recycling. It's helped a lot! -
Shaun Guild 4/22/2020 7:41 AMHappy Earth Day, Challenges are going well, we haven't bought any cases of water in sometime. We've used our reusable coolers for our water especially being at home and going on bike trails. It's been a great way to help make a difference. -
Shaun Guild 4/21/2020 8:45 AMChallenges are going well! There's a lot of earth day related programs streaming right now including documentaries. It's been a great awareness for our family and have enjoyed watching my kids embrace earth day/ week. -
Shaun Guild 4/17/2020 9:45 AMRead an interesting article today on sunken tanker ships and how they are being extracted from oceans to protect the environment. Take a lot of time and a lot of money. Interesting read! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Learn the Truth About Expiration DatesHow does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?
Shaun Guild 4/16/2020 1:12 PMBeing in retail it's interesting explaining this to people. In our house we continually discuss this especially with things such as yogurt. This also plays a big factor in how we/ I donate food.
