Food Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
How does food sovereignty address the complex agrarian transition to modern food systems?

    JESSICA HEADLEE's avatar
    JESSICA HEADLEE 4/25/2020 3:57 PM
It puts people and their needs at the heart of everything related to food, not profit. It allows people to take control of the food they want, either by growing it themselves or supporting those who grow for the community. Everyone has a right to proper, healthy, sustainable food and no one should profit grotesquely from it while so many starve.

    Forests Plant Trees
How is planting trees good for your mental, physical, and spiritual health?

    JESSICA HEADLEE's avatar
    JESSICA HEADLEE 4/25/2020 3:37 PM
Personally, I feel as if nature is my sanctuary, my church, the place where I can commune with God. So planting a tree is like helping to raise a roof on a church. It's good for my physical health because it's a lot of work planting the tree and caring for it the first year, but also it'll just make my environment much healthier. It helps me mentally, because it makes me feel accomplished, makes me feel good that I was able to do my part to help.

    Wildlife Research Benefits of Biodiversity
How can you encourage biodiversity by your own actions?

    JESSICA HEADLEE's avatar
    JESSICA HEADLEE 4/24/2020 12:11 PM
The easiest I can think of is planting more native plants around the house, including trees, shrubs, and flowers. These plants will help provide food for the squirrels and deer that visit the yard and to the birds that might want to nest in them. The plants will also help the bee populations.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Fresh Water Dishwasher Efficiency
How can your region/household prepare for changing water situations in order to become more resilient?

    JESSICA HEADLEE's avatar
    JESSICA HEADLEE 4/24/2020 11:44 AM
At the moment, we can't afford a new dishwasher or more efficient toilets. In the meantime, we as a household, will put away money every month so that we can finally buy a new dishwasher and have it installed properly. Dishwasher will only be run if completely full, only handwash dishes that can't go in the washer and turn off the tap while scrubbing the dish. As for the toilets, try to flush only when necessary (pretend it's a power outage and you're trying to conserve water) and we'll put a full bottle of water in the tank so that it fills with less water.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Fresh Water Use a Reusable Water Bottle
Using the links provided, investigate the bottling practices of water corporations. There have been many cases where the water rights of the local people have been violated or even completely disregarded when a corporation decides to bottle water from a particular water source. How can you advocate for those who have been harmed - both humans and wildlife - by this bottling process?

I joined the Freshwater Force with WWF and I'll see how they believe that I can help. In the meantime, I'll proudly show-off my reusable water bottle (it has a clip so I can hang it from a belt or bag!) whenever I go out, and I'll talk to all the people I know about how much money and plastic I've saved since I've stopped buying bottled water.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Wildlife Use Reusable Bags
What do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?

    JESSICA HEADLEE's avatar
    JESSICA HEADLEE 4/23/2020 5:18 PM
I need to make a better habit of keeping reusable bags with me in the car. I'm good when I go to the grocery store, and if I happen to forget I carry the items out by hand or get a paper bag. When I got to other places, like the mall or a multi-purpose store, I don't always bring reusable bags with me because I don't know how many I'll need. So in the future, I should just keep some handy in the car to use.

    Oceans Smart Seafood Choices
Many states and countries have advisories on eating fish. Find out what is advised for your region. Do you think your diet choices fall within these guidelines? What steps do you need to take to make sure that they do?

    JESSICA HEADLEE's avatar
    JESSICA HEADLEE 4/23/2020 5:07 PM
No, unfortunately, my diet choices don't always meet the guidelines. Starting now, I can make a more conscious effort in buying the right products and look for trusted seals of approval, including the MSC label.
