Action Track: Building Resilience

Research Local Climate Issues

I will spend at least 10 minute(s) a day researching climate issues or climate solutions in my local area and share with others through my team feed, social media, or conversations with my peers.

Oceans

Say No to Plastic Straws

An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When marine wildlife ingest plastic, they have a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Building Resilience Research Local Climate Issues
In what ways is your local community resilient to shock events like we’ve experienced recently? How could you help it become more resilient?

My community has put up new regulations like staying 6 feet apart and leaving your homes only for essential needs. I think we could help make our community more resilient to this disease is by mandating everyone to wear masks and gloves when going to public places like grocery stores.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Fresh Water Dishwasher Efficiency
How can your region/household prepare for changing water situations in order to become more resilient?

We can start by not wasting water with washing clothes and dishes. We can hand wash plates and cups, and only use the dishwasher when it's completely full. We can also help by only doing a couple of washes for clothes, and letting them air dry instead of using the dryer.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Wildlife Leave No Trace
Educator Stephanie Kaza advises her students to focus on what they care about most when addressing the enormity of ecological problems. Is there a specific area you feel particularly called to work on?

Maybe places that have a lot of litter/trash in it like parks or something. I could go and clean those places up.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Oceans Say No to Plastic Straws
What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

I think we use a lot of plastic bags and straws. Some substitutes for these things can be reusable cloth grocery bags or paper bags. For straws, you can use a reusable metal straw or just make sure to tell your waiter that you don't want one.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Forests Use a Reusable Mug
Maybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reusable one, but it's just hard to make the switch. What stands in your way of making this a habit? By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?

I don't see many challenges when using a reusable mug except for the fact that it might be more effort to carry it around once you're done with it instead of just throwing it away. But I think in the end it's nice to know that you're not wasting plastic or anything for a drink and the environment will benefit from it.
