Heather's actions
Oceans
Smart Seafood Choices
I will visit seafoodwatch.org or download the app and commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean.
Wildlife
Research a Wild Animal
I will spend at least 5 minutes learning about a wild animal I find interesting, including their life cycle, habitat, ecosystem functions, and interactions with humans (if any!).
Wildlife
Research Benefits of Biodiversity
I will spend at least 5 minutes researching how biodiversity positively impacts our world and how the loss of biodiversity harms it.
Wildlife
Support Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators, including monarch butterflies, to produce fruit. I will spend 5 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.
Wildlife
Use Reusable Bags
Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals. If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.
Fresh Water
Conserve Toilet Water
I will save up to 12 gallons (45 L) of water a day by flushing only when necessary.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlife Use Reusable BagsWhat do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?
Heather Porrello 4/01/2020 8:12 PMI try to take my backpack with me everywhere I go just in case. I also carry spare bags in the trunk of my car. I know other people who have used a sweatshirt and turned it into a makeshift bag to carry stuff. If I do have to use a plastic bag, I can reuse it as much as possible. I saw on a youtube video recently how you can plant lettuce heads in a bag if you fill it with soil and poke some holes in it. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFresh Water Conserve Toilet WaterWhat would a sustainable water future in your region look like? What needs to change?
Heather Porrello 4/01/2020 6:08 PMCompost toilets are great for water conservation. In Thailand, we built one around a banana tree so our waste would become food for the tree. I think we could benefit by adopting a modern approach to our bathroom habits and design. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlife Support PollinatorsWhy is it important to take care of pollinators?
Heather Porrello 4/01/2020 6:02 PMPollinators facilitate reproduction in 90% of the world's flowering plants. No bees equal no squash, almonds, etc. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlife Research Benefits of BiodiversityHow can you encourage biodiversity by your own actions?
Heather Porrello 4/01/2020 5:57 PMMany diseases (in humans) are caused by humans destroying wild animal habitats. I hope to encourage others to be respectful, by sharing this info with as many people who will hear it, lol. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlife Research a Wild AnimalWhat interesting facts did you learn about the animal you researched? What are some of your favorite things about this animal?
Heather Porrello 4/01/2020 5:32 PMI learned about how re-introducing the wolves into yellow stone national park did remarkable things for the biodiversity!
Additionally, there are only two northern white rhinos left and are kept under 24-hour surveillance. -
Heather Porrello 4/01/2020 5:18 PMI love the wildlife challenge. I want to plant some sunflowers and maybe lavender for the bees/pollinators this year!
