Julia's actions
Food
Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
I will spend at least 5 minutes learning how to differentiate between sell by, use by, and best by dates.
Oceans
Smart Seafood Choices
I will visit seafoodwatch.org or download the app and commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean.
Forests
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area while following CDC guidelines for social distancing.
Forests
Plant Trees
I will plant 2 native tree(s) in my community, public parks, or backyard.
Wildlife
Research a Wild Animal
I will spend at least 15 minutes learning about a wild animal I find interesting, including their life cycle, habitat, ecosystem functions, and interactions with humans (if any!).
Forests
Forest-Friendly Foods
I will replace or remove the palm oil, coffee, and cocoa products in my current diet that are known to contribute to deforestation.
Fresh Water
Shorter showers
I will take shorter showers to reduce the amount of water being used
People
Volunteer in my Community
I will volunteer 4 hour(s) in my community helping people who are most at need right now, including elderly and immunocompromised people, people without childcare, and people whose jobs have been affected by social distancing measures.
Oceans
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Refuse
I will refuse plastic bags and other single use plastic items, but if given to me, I will reuse the plastic item if possible
Oceans
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When marine wildlife ingest plastic, they have a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 3 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Forests
Ecofriendly School supplies
I will buy school supplies that will cause less waste and I will reuse old school supplies from past years
Fresh Water
Eco-friendly Gardening
I will plant native species, landscape with water-efficient plants, and use eco-friendly fertilizers.
Fresh Water
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 5 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Wildlife
Seek Alternative Gifts and Souvenirs
Bringing home unique souvenirs from trips you’ve enjoyed is meaningful, and giving people unique gifts from other places is fun. Seek souvenirs and gifts that support local communities and do not cause harm to the environment or wildlife.
Wildlife
Use Reusable Bags
Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals. If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlife Seek Alternative Gifts and SouvenirsHow do your consumption choices affect the health of wildlife and other communities?
Julia Jones 4/30/2020 8:05 PMIt’s important to know that your food is coming from a sustainable resource. Many animals are over hunted/ fished, and are going extinct in parts of the world and are having a major effect on the population of other animals that rely on them for food. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONForests Plant TreesHow is planting trees good for your mental, physical, and spiritual health?
Julia Jones 4/30/2020 8:01 PMIt is good to know that you are doing something good for your planet and adding another tree into the ecosystem that needs as much help as possible. -

Sofia Fick 4/28/2020 1:20 PMHi Julia!
Cute puppy!
I'm Sofia, and I'm the University of Minnesota Department of Sustainability intern this semester! As earth month and the eco challenge wrap up, I'm reaching out to some of the team members who have been extremely active throughout the challenge, in hopes of writing a little blog post for the Institute on the Environment about the participants! You personally have one of the highest scores out of all of the eco challenge participants! It would be amazing to start a little email exchange with you, to chat about who you are, why you've been so active, and what the eco challenge has brought to your life this month! Other topics of discussion are welcomed, of course. My email is fick0054@umn.edu. If you'd like to contact me, that's great! If not, and you'd prefer I contact you, I can do that! Just reply to this comment with your email. If you don't want to period, that's totally okay as well! Keep me posted, Both the earth and I are proud of your hard work this month:)

REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlife Research a Wild AnimalWhat interesting facts did you learn about the animal you researched? What are some of your favorite things about this animal?
Julia Jones 4/24/2020 2:46 PMI learned many cool facts about polar bears such as that polar bears’ fur is actually transparent even though it appears white. They also are classified as marine mammals because they spend most of their lives in the water. -
