Advocate For More Packaging Options
Plastic packaging can clog our water ways and the stomachs of sea creatures. I will advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, markets, at work, or on campus.

Use a Reusable Mug
If possible, I will avoid sending 3 disposable cup(s) to the landfill each day by using a reusable mug.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Connect While Social Distancing

People
Spend Time Outside

Action Track: Building Resilience
Advocate For More Food Options
Access to affordable, nutritious food is a food justice issue. I will advocate for local and/or organic food options in my state and/or community.
Forests
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area while following CDC guidelines for social distancing.
Fresh Water
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 3 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Fresh Water
Dishwasher Efficiency
I will scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading into the dishwasher and only run the dishwasher when it’s full.
Action Track: Earth Day Together!
Earth Day Action: Share Eco Tips
Through social media or on the Earth Day Ecochallenge feed, I will share my favorite environmentally friendly habit with my friends, even if it’s not an Earth Day action.
Fresh Water
Eco-friendly Gardening
I will plant native species, landscape with water-efficient plants, and use eco-friendly fertilizers.
Wildlife
Research a Wild Animal
I will spend at least 20 minutes learning about a wild animal I find interesting, including their life cycle, habitat, ecosystem functions, and interactions with humans (if any!).
Oceans
Smart Seafood Choices
I will visit seafoodwatch.org or download the app and commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean.
Oceans
Learn about Our Oceans
I will spend at least 20 minutes learning about how our oceans support life on Earth by producing oxygen, regulating climate, and providing habitat, food, and jobs.
Climate
Choose LED Bulbs
I will replace 2 incandescent lightbulb(s) with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
Action Track: Earth Day Together!
Earth Day Action: Research and Support Local Organizations
I will spend 20 minutes researching local organizations and businesses in my community, then support one of them by writing a testimonial or positive review, ordering curbside, making a donation to my favorite nonprofit, or supporting them in another way.

REFLECTION QUESTIONOceans Learn about Our OceansWhat is one way in which oceans support your life on Earth? What is one way you can help take care of ocean health with your actions?
Mackenzie Jones 4/29/2020 6:46 AMOne way the oceans support my life is it helps regulate our climate, it absorbs carbon dioxide, and is the #1 source of protein. One thing that I will do to help take care of ocean health is to use reusable products instead of paper or plastic products. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Earth Day Together! Earth Day Action: Share Eco TipsWhat environmentally friendly habit have you most recently implemented? How do you ensure that you are successful in creating or changing a habit?
Mackenzie Jones 4/28/2020 6:00 PMThe most environmentally habit that I have changed is not getting water bottles. I have gotten a filter that allows me to fill up my reusable water bottles without wasting plastic bottles. I ensure that I will be successful in creating this habit because it is easily excess able. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Advocate For More Food OptionsWhat efforts would help food insecure regions have access to local, seasonal foods?
Mackenzie Jones 4/28/2020 5:58 PMI go to FGCU and we have a food forrest that allows our students to get local, seasonal foods whenever we want. It allows us to engage in nature and learn about the new and interesting fruits and vegetables that grow in there. If food forrest were set up throughout the counties it would allow other people to engage as well. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate Choose LED BulbsChanging lightbulbs is an excellent first step toward energy efficiency! In what other ways can you exercise your civic duty to protect the environment and reduce carbon emissions?
Mackenzie Jones 4/28/2020 5:52 PMOne thing that can reduce carbon emissions is walking or biking more instead of driving. Not only will it help the carbon emission but it can help you get in shape as well. Another thing people could do is unplug your devices when there not in use. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Earth Day Together! Earth Day Action: Research and Support Local OrganizationsWhy is it important to support local organizations and businesses? How does it help to build a more resilient community?
Mackenzie Jones 4/28/2020 5:49 PMIt is very important to support local organization because it not only helps there program but the impact there trying to make on whatever they are fundraising. I went to the Earth day website and ordered a shirt that was very cool. It was for a celebration for the 50th Earth day, with sea turtles on it. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONOceans Advocate For More Packaging OptionsWhat concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.
Mackenzie Jones 4/28/2020 5:47 PMI think the most concerning effect we are having on the Earth right now is littering. So far, since this pandemic happened the Earth has been healing from all the pollution being put into the atmosphere all these years. Even though the pollution is decreases littering is still everywhere I go and it needs to be cleaned up. Especially in the oceans, beautiful creatures are dying everyday because of the littering that is being thrown in the ocean. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONForests Use a Reusable MugMaybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reusable one, but it's just hard to make the switch. What stands in your way of making this a habit? By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?
Mackenzie Jones 4/28/2020 9:42 AMBefore doing this activity I was using plastic cups to have a glass of water or any drink. Now I have purchased cheap cups from Walmart that has saved a lot of plastic cups being used and then immediately being thrown away. It helps the landfill a lot with not all of those disposable cups being thrown in. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFresh Water Dishwasher EfficiencyHow can your region/household prepare for changing water situations in order to become more resilient?
Mackenzie Jones 4/28/2020 9:38 AMOne thing we can do is wash dishes instead of putting them in the dishwater. Another thing we can do is limit how many minutes we are in the shower. Showers put out a lot of water, less time in the shower means less water being wasted. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFresh Water Eco-friendly GardeningWhat are the most prominent water concerns in your area? Examples include drought, flooding, pollution, access, security, and privatization.
Mackenzie Jones 4/27/2020 11:21 AMThe most prominent water concerns in the area is probably when we don't have rain for a couple weeks. Some plants need to be watered every other day. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONForests Explore My AreaHow can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place?
Mackenzie Jones 4/27/2020 9:46 AMI live on campus (FGCU) and when I was walking around I stumbled upon a trail I had never seen before. It was up a little hill and there were trees on both sides. It went down a little river right by North lake. It was very interesting and cool to find something that was here all along but I never found until now.
