    Oceans Learn about Our Oceans
What is one way in which oceans support your life on Earth? What is one way you can help take care of ocean health with your actions?

One way the oceans support my life is it helps regulate our climate, it absorbs carbon dioxide, and is the #1 source of protein. One thing that I will do to help take care of ocean health is to use reusable products instead of paper or plastic products.

What environmentally friendly habit have you most recently implemented? How do you ensure that you are successful in creating or changing a habit?

    Mackenzie Jones's avatar

The most environmentally habit that I have changed is not getting water bottles. I have gotten a filter that allows me to fill up my reusable water bottles without wasting plastic bottles. I ensure that I will be successful in creating this habit because it is easily excess able.

What efforts would help food insecure regions have access to local, seasonal foods?

    Mackenzie Jones's avatar
    Mackenzie Jones 4/28/2020 5:58 PM
I go to FGCU and we have a food forrest that allows our students to get local, seasonal foods whenever we want. It allows us to engage in nature and learn about the new and interesting fruits and vegetables that grow in there. If food forrest were set up throughout the counties it would allow other people to engage as well.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Climate Choose LED Bulbs
Changing lightbulbs is an excellent first step toward energy efficiency! In what other ways can you exercise your civic duty to protect the environment and reduce carbon emissions?

    Mackenzie Jones's avatar
    Mackenzie Jones 4/28/2020 5:52 PM
One thing that can reduce carbon emissions is walking or biking more instead of driving. Not only will it help the carbon emission but it can help you get in shape as well. Another thing people could do is unplug your devices when there not in use.

Why is it important to support local organizations and businesses? How does it help to build a more resilient community?

    Mackenzie Jones's avatar

It is very important to support local organization because it not only helps there program but the impact there trying to make on whatever they are fundraising. I went to the Earth day website and ordered a shirt that was very cool. It was for a celebration for the 50th Earth day, with sea turtles on it.

What concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.

I think the most concerning effect we are having on the Earth right now is littering. So far, since this pandemic happened the Earth has been healing from all the pollution being put into the atmosphere all these years. Even though the pollution is decreases littering is still everywhere I go and it needs to be cleaned up. Especially in the oceans, beautiful creatures are dying everyday because of the littering that is being thrown in the ocean.

    Forests Use a Reusable Mug
Maybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reusable one, but it's just hard to make the switch. What stands in your way of making this a habit? By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?

Before doing this activity I was using plastic cups to have a glass of water or any drink. Now I have purchased cheap cups from Walmart that has saved a lot of plastic cups being used and then immediately being thrown away. It helps the landfill a lot with not all of those disposable cups being thrown in.

    Fresh Water Dishwasher Efficiency
How can your region/household prepare for changing water situations in order to become more resilient?

    Mackenzie Jones's avatar
    Mackenzie Jones 4/28/2020 9:38 AM
One thing we can do is wash dishes instead of putting them in the dishwater. Another thing we can do is limit how many minutes we are in the shower. Showers put out a lot of water, less time in the shower means less water being wasted.

I live on campus (FGCU) and when I was walking around I stumbled upon a trail I had never seen before. It was up a little hill and there were trees on both sides. It went down a little river right by North lake. It was very interesting and cool to find something that was here all along but I never found until now.
