Ruby's actions
Wildlife
Research a Wild Animal
I will spend at least 30 minutes learning about a wild animal I find interesting, including their life cycle, habitat, ecosystem functions, and interactions with humans (if any!).
Action Track: Building Resilience
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 45 minute(s) each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside that follows CDC guidelines for preventing disease spread.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Support Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators, including monarch butterflies, to produce fruit. I will spend 20 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.
People
Connect While Social Distancing
I will connect with at least 1 person/people a day through phone call or video chat to support mine and other’s mental and emotional health during this challenging time.
Forests
Advocate for Forest Protection
I will contact 2 congress people or representatives to advocate for public policy that protects forests and improves their ability to sequester carbon and nourish biodiversity.
Oceans
Learn about Our Oceans
I will spend at least 60 minutes learning about how our oceans support life on Earth by producing oxygen, regulating climate, and providing habitat, food, and jobs.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
I will watch 1 documentary(ies) about food sovereignty: the right of local peoples to control their own food systems including markets, ecological resources, food cultures and production methods.
Action Track: Earth Day Together!
Earth Day Action: Write a Love Letter, Poem, or Song to Earth
I will express my love and gratitude for our Earth by writing a love letter, poem, or song to Earth.
Action Track: Earth Day Together!
Earth Day Action: Research and Support Local Organizations
I will spend 60 minutes researching local organizations and businesses in my community, then support one of them by writing a testimonial or positive review, ordering curbside, making a donation to my favorite nonprofit, or supporting them in another way.
Action Track: Earth Day Together!
Earth Day Action: Share Eco Tips
Through social media or on the Earth Day Ecochallenge feed, I will share my favorite environmentally friendly habit with my friends, even if it’s not an Earth Day action.

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Earth Day Together! What are you grateful for about our planet? Share what you created or your general thoughts of love and gratitude with everyone else!
Ruby Kaill 4/22/2020 11:22 PMWriting a love letter to the earth was probably my favorite and yet most emotional action I have taken this Earth Day. Such a freaking good idea, will do again. I highly recommend if you just need a good cry. -
Ruby Kaill 4/21/2020 1:40 PMThis week to celebrate Earth Week I will attend the Salish Sea Conservation Conference online and I'm super excited!-

Ruby Kaill 4/10/2020 1:15 PMI highly recommend the Earth Month Collection on Disney+ if you have it! It has DisneyNature and National Geographic documentaries and shows and it is a great way to learn more about different areas and wildlife. My favorites are Jane (recovered footage from Jane Goodall's research on chimpanzees in Gombe) and Wings of Life (stories of pollinators from the point of view of flowers). -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlifeWhat interesting facts did you learn about the animal you researched? What are some of your favorite things about this animal?
Ruby Kaill 4/08/2020 9:23 PMI watched a documentary on brown bears in Alaska, and it was really interesting to learn about yet another animal that relies on salmon. It was an important reminder of how crucial they are to many ecosystems and that we must work hard to protect them, as well.-
Ainsley Mayo 4/09/2020 5:27 PMYes! I love learning how many animals rely on salmon to survive! They are so crucial to our ecosystem in the Pacific Northwest!

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building ResilienceWhy is it important to take care of pollinators?
Ruby Kaill 4/05/2020 11:15 AMIt's important to take care of pollinators not only because they support our wildlife and many plants but because they are vital to the ecosystems that they are in. I had so much finding plants that were pollinator-friendly and I finally put to use a book I had on it! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONOceansWhat is one way in which oceans support your life on Earth? What is one way you can help take care of ocean health with your actions?
Ruby Kaill 4/03/2020 1:37 PMIt's important for the biodiversity and health of the ocean that we create more marine protected areas and dramatically reduce carbon emissions. I loved learning about the ways that marine life supports us. It was a great reminder that there is so much more to explore and that all is not lost.
