Marilynn's actions
Action Track: Building Resilience
Use Muscle Power
I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips, and I will only use muscle-powered transportation for all other trips.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Research Benefits of Biodiversity
I will spend at least 20 minutes researching how biodiversity positively impacts our world and how the loss of biodiversity harms it.
Fresh Water
Dishwasher Efficiency
I will scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading into the dishwasher and only run the dishwasher when it’s full.
Forests
Forest-Friendly Foods
I will replace or remove the palm oil, coffee, and cocoa products in my current diet that are known to contribute to deforestation.
Oceans
Support Organic Growing Methods
I will buy organic cotton and foods grown without the use of synthetic nitrogen fertilizers.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 30 minute(s) each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside that follows CDC guidelines for preventing disease spread.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Marilynn Kelly 4/26/2020 4:54 PMThis Eco Challenge has been really fun, although a little discouraging at times. I think it coincided with our book very well, every challenge made me think about whatever concept we were reading about. In particular this challenge along with the book made me think about the materials economy even more than before. Every time I make a purchase now I try to envision where it came from and if it helped or hurt those who were involved in the process of getting it to me. -
Marilynn Kelly 4/18/2020 10:30 PMI finally got my EBT card in the mail! After being unemployed for more than a month now, I was very excited to get some money to buy groceries other than the beans I had been eating. Despite my efforts toward living sustainably, I bought quite a bit of packaged foods. My purchases remained plant based, but some of them contain palm oil and cocoa. I actively "justified" these purchases while in the store by thinking, "I've been depressed, pigging out makes me happy so I deserve it right now." Booooo. But in the future I am going to try to be better about my purchases. -
Marilynn Kelly 4/18/2020 10:24 PMToday I received my financial aid refund, so I wanted to treat myself to some new sheets. With the EcoChallenge in mind, I looked into sustainably made sheets, or at least organic cotton. I was shocked to find that I couldn't find a single set under $170! It was a bummer to see that, needless to say I didn't buy new sheets. I think I'll just hope to find a lightly used set at a thrift store once they're open again. I have also been thinking about learning to sew, I think that making my own clothing or repairing used items is a cheaper and eco-friendly way to clothe oneself. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONForests Forest-Friendly FoodsHow difficult or easy was it to change your diet?
Marilynn Kelly 4/14/2020 5:48 PMGiving up coffee was difficult for me, but it has been on my list for awhile. Thankfully this challenge has motivated me to do so! I'm replacing it with loose leaf yerba mate, although I haven't looked into the consequences of it I think it may be better than coffee. -
Marilynn Kelly 4/14/2020 5:46 PMToday has been a very lazy day, I haven't really gone outside or even cooked. I guess that's being sustainable in a way? Haha. -
Marilynn Kelly 4/11/2020 10:52 PMMy challenge is going okay. I recently started borrowing a family friends car to avoid being in contact with more people on the bus, so I have driven a couple of miles the last two days. Remaining plant based and actively consuming less unneeded water.
