Action Track: Building Resilience
Support Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators, including monarch butterflies, to produce fruit. I will spend 25 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.
Wildlife
Research a Wild Animal
I will spend at least 30 minutes learning about a wild animal I find interesting, including their life cycle, habitat, ecosystem functions, and interactions with humans (if any!).
Forests
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area while following CDC guidelines for social distancing.
Oceans
Learn about Our Oceans
I will spend at least 30 minutes learning about how our oceans support life on Earth by producing oxygen, regulating climate, and providing habitat, food, and jobs.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Connect While Social Distancing
I will connect with at least 1 person/people a day through phone call or video chat to support mine and other’s mental and emotional health during this challenging time.
People
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 30 minute(s) each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside that follows CDC guidelines for preventing disease spread.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Morgan Kilpatrick 4/17/2020 9:28 AMIt has been so beneficial to have an extra push to make time to be outside lately. Otherwise, I forget and end up feeling weird about staying indoors all day. -
Morgan Kilpatrick 4/16/2020 10:05 AMI have always struggled with drinking enough water, but I have been using a reusable water bottle the last few days and each day I have met my goal water intake! So not only has it helped me reduce waste, it has also allowed me to reach a health goal I already previously wanted to complete. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONOceans Learn about Our OceansWhat is one way in which oceans support your life on Earth? What is one way you can help take care of ocean health with your actions?
Morgan Kilpatrick 4/16/2020 10:02 AMThe phytoplankton in the ocean supports life on earth by producing almost half of the oxygen we breathe; without them, we would not be able to sustain life in the capacity that we have today. The way I can help take care of the ocean health with my actions is to make efforts to reduce my own trash production, support companies and legislature that makes efforts to improve the ocean, and raise awareness of how important and vulnerable the ocean is. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlife Research a Wild AnimalWhat interesting facts did you learn about the animal you researched? What are some of your favorite things about this animal?
Morgan Kilpatrick 4/14/2020 10:57 AMI researched nine-banded armadillos because while I was sitting on my porch last night, I saw one just waltz right down the street. A fun fact I liked was that their scientific Latin name apparently comes from an Aztec word for "turtle-rabbit" and their common name, armadillo, comes from a Spanish word for "little armored one" which I think is just so cute. A super interesting thing is that each litter consists of four identical quadruplets because the fertilized egg produces four separate embryos, which as a biology major, I have never heard of before. They are also known to cross small bodies of water by holding their breath and walking on the bottom!!!! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Connect While Social DistancingHow does connecting with others help your own mental and emotional health? How can it help support others?
Morgan Kilpatrick 4/14/2020 10:29 AMConnecting with others has a profound effect on my mental and emotional health. Even if it is just a phone call or video chat with my sister, it makes me feel a lot more "real" and I feel a bit more human after those conversations. I don't get that same feeling from texting, even though it does help a little bit more than nothing at all. Even though I am home with my parents, talking to someone else is a great change and brightens my mood greatly. I think reaching out and connecting with other people can remind them that you care and love someone, which is so important for everyone to feel every now and then. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONForests Explore My AreaHow can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place?
Morgan Kilpatrick 4/07/2020 8:04 AMIt makes me personally feel a lot more confident and knowledgeable when I spend time outside exploring what is around me. When I spend time outdoors, I feel more secure in my place in my community and connected to what is around me. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPeople Spend Time OutsideRachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?
Morgan Kilpatrick 4/07/2020 7:51 AMThat absolutely rings true for me personally. I can always feel the difference in my mood and outlook when I spend more time outdoors and explore nature. I think it really hurts our culture that we spend most of our time indoors because it disconnects us from the reality of our world.
