Maggie's actions
Wildlife
Support Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators, including monarch butterflies, to produce fruit. I will spend 5 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.
Fresh Water
Water-Friendly Beauty Products
Avoid beauty products with micro beads or harsh chemicals that will feed into the ground and your water supply.
People
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 60 minute(s) each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside that follows CDC guidelines for preventing disease spread.
Food
Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
I will spend at least 5 minutes learning how to differentiate between sell by, use by, and best by dates.
Oceans
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When marine wildlife ingest plastic, they have a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 3 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Forests
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area while following CDC guidelines for social distancing.
Climate
Choose LED Bulbs
I will replace 3 incandescent lightbulb(s) with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Research Benefits of Biodiversity
I will spend at least 10 minutes researching how biodiversity positively impacts our world and how the loss of biodiversity harms it.
Food
Reduce Animal Products
I will enjoy 3 meatless meal(s) and/or 1 vegan meal(s) each day of the challenge.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Connect While Social Distancing
I will connect with at least 3 person/people a day through phone call or video chat to support mine and other’s mental and emotional health during this challenging time.
Wildlife
Research a Wild Animal
I will spend at least 10 minutes learning about a wild animal I find interesting, including their life cycle, habitat, ecosystem functions, and interactions with humans (if any!).
Oceans
Smart Seafood Choices
I will visit seafoodwatch.org or download the app and commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean.
Action Track: Earth Day Together!
Earth Day Action: Research and Support Local Organizations
I will spend 5 minutes researching local organizations and businesses in my community, then support one of them by writing a testimonial or positive review, ordering curbside, making a donation to my favorite nonprofit, or supporting them in another way.
Action Track: Earth Day Together!
Earth Day Action: Share Eco Tips
Through social media or on the Earth Day Ecochallenge feed, I will share my favorite environmentally friendly habit with my friends, even if it’s not an Earth Day action.

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Earth Day Together! Earth Day Action: Research and Support Local OrganizationsWhy is it important to support local organizations and businesses? How does it help to build a more resilient community?
Maggie Kinton 4/22/2020 11:21 AMIt's important to support local businesses because it helps support the businesses' employees and owners, and builds a better community. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONOceans Smart Seafood ChoicesMany states and countries have advisories on eating fish. Find out what is advised for your region. Do you think your diet choices fall within these guidelines? What steps do you need to take to make sure that they do?
Maggie Kinton 4/21/2020 1:05 PMWomen and children in North Carolina should not eat fish high in Mercury. My choices fall within these guidelines already because I'm vegetarian and I don't eat fish. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Earth Day Together! Earth Day Action: Share Eco TipsWhat environmentally friendly habit have you most recently implemented? How do you ensure that you are successful in creating or changing a habit?
Maggie Kinton 4/20/2020 10:21 AMMost recently I have replaced light bulbs with LEDs and kept the lights off in my house when they aren't necessary. I can ensure that I am successful in creating a habit by first setting easy attainable goals. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlife Support PollinatorsWhy is it important to take care of pollinators?
Maggie Kinton 4/17/2020 9:15 AMPollinators are important because they help spread pollen to different plants that are necessary for our environment and for ourselves: without pollinators we wouldn't have as much food to eat. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFresh Water Water-Friendly Beauty ProductsBeyond what does or doesn't come out of the tap at home, how do your choices affect freshwater locally and globally?
Maggie Kinton 4/15/2020 1:46 PMBy using beauty products without microbeads or even using less products in general, I can reduce the amount of plastics in oceans throughout the world, such as in the Pacific Ocean. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Learn the Truth About Expiration DatesHow does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?
Maggie Kinton 4/14/2020 12:40 PMKnowing the difference will help me to not worry about dates on the packages of foods so much, because it usually doesn't make a difference. It will help me to not waste as much food. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate Choose LED BulbsChanging lightbulbs is an excellent first step toward energy efficiency! In what other ways can you exercise your civic duty to protect the environment and reduce carbon emissions?
Maggie Kinton 4/11/2020 4:22 PMI can use public transportation or carpool, or even just walk somewhere. I can also try not to turn on lights when I don't need to use them, and unplug devices I'm not currently using. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONOceans Say No to Plastic StrawsWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Maggie Kinton 4/10/2020 2:51 PMI regularly use plastic bags at grocery stores, bathroom products, and food packaging. I could buy zero waste bathroom products like shampoo, and use reusable bags at the store. I could also try to buy food in bulk to use less packaging. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPeople Spend Time OutsideRachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?
Maggie Kinton 4/08/2020 4:39 PMYes, this rings true for me. Spending time outside helps me to feel more calm, and it helps me to appreciate what's around me more. I think if everyone were to spend more time outdoors, we would learn to be more grateful. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlife Research a Wild AnimalWhat interesting facts did you learn about the animal you researched? What are some of your favorite things about this animal?
Maggie Kinton 4/07/2020 2:59 PMI learned that the American Black Bear is the world's most common bear species. It is not considered threatened by extinction. They are not closely related to brown bears and polar bears. I love that I can see a black bear on a random day.
