  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Earth Day Together! Earth Day Action: Share Eco Tips
What environmentally friendly habit have you most recently implemented? How do you ensure that you are successful in creating or changing a habit?

My favorite habit is using a reusable water bottle to prevent the use of plastic. I keep up this habit by always having a water bottle near me so I don't need to go get a plastic one.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Forests Explore My Area
How can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place?

    Flora Konz's avatar
    Flora Konz 4/21/2020 9:57 AM
It enhances your sense of place because by spending time outdoors, you feel more connected to your local community and see places that have always been around you, yet you just haven't stopped to notice them before.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Forests Forest-Friendly Foods
How difficult or easy was it to change your diet?

    Flora Konz's avatar
    Flora Konz 4/17/2020 10:30 AM
I think most food products I have are already Rainforest Alliance certified, but I'll need to go more in-depth on my cosmetics. A lot of products can be harder to change if you already have dietary restrictions and those are the only ones you can eat, so I think it would be harder in that case.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Building Resilience Use Muscle Power
How do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience or enjoyment differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?

Practicing social isolation has definitely influenced my transportation choices. We only really go to the grocery store, and if we really want some takeout we'll do that in a safe way. My mom and I go on walks practically every day, and it's been so nice to see my neighborhood in a new way. We're usually moving so fast that we don't stop to look around, but having this virus has made me see the beauty in Spring and I have gained a deeper appreciation for my beautiful neighborhood.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Wildlife Leave No Trace
Educator Stephanie Kaza advises her students to focus on what they care about most when addressing the enormity of ecological problems. Is there a specific area you feel particularly called to work on?

    Flora Konz's avatar
    Flora Konz 4/15/2020 8:10 AM
An area that really grabs me Is environmental justice and how women's rights are related to sustainability. There are so many sectors that are influenced by the environment or influence it, yet no one knows about them. The interrelatedness of everything is fascinating.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Fresh Water Use a Reusable Water Bottle
Using the links provided, investigate the bottling practices of water corporations. There have been many cases where the water rights of the local people have been violated or even completely disregarded when a corporation decides to bottle water from a particular water source. How can you advocate for those who have been harmed - both humans and wildlife - by this bottling process?

    Flora Konz 4/03/2020 9:27 AM
I can call my political representatives and tell them this info, while giving them the benefits of using reusable water bottles. Also, by contacting companies that these representatives support, this issue of environmental consciousness directly affects these political representatives. If people don't support a company that they're supporting, it will directly hurt their campaign.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Building Resilience Connect While Social Distancing
How does connecting with others help your own mental and emotional health? How can it help support others?

    Flora Konz's avatar
    Flora Konz 4/03/2020 9:25 AM
Connecting with others helps my mental health because it makes me feel human and reminds me that even though I can't see many people face to face, there are still other ways to connect so that I'm not missing them too much. It helps support them by reminding them that they still have people who love and care about them, which can be just what we need during this difficult time.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Building Resilience Spend Time Outside
Rachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?

    Flora Konz's avatar
    Flora Konz 3/30/2020 9:47 AM
Yes, I agree with that. I think that a culture spending most of its time indoors loses connection with the earth and other people (even while social distancing), because going outside grounds you and reminds you that even with all the worldly chaos, especially right now with COVID-19, we are still humans and the seasons are still changing. It's relaxing and calming, plus it's so beautiful everywhere and a sunny day can immediately brighten your mood. It just really puts everything into perspective.
