Food
Shop Less!
We will go to the market only twice/week during the epidemic. We will wear masks. We don't want to get or give the virus.
Food
Reduce Animal Products
I will enjoy 1 meatless meal(s) and/or 0 vegan meal(s) each day of the challenge.
People
Books! Books! Books!
Around Albany there are little book houses on stands that contain contributions, free for the taking. I will add to these book houses twice/week. Incidentally, these houses were made by local members of the Yale Club during a previous Yale Day of Service.
People
Precious Seniors!
I have had to suspend weekly meetings of a chorus I conduct and a writing workshop I lead. The goal here is to provide prompts for the writers and a word of support for the chorus members.
Climate
Explore Resources Available on "Yale Program on Climate Change Communication" Website
I will spend at least (___) minute(s) exploring the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication website, filled with interesting articles, research on the "Six Americas" and access to the SASSY! survey, and will share with others through my team feed, social media, or conversations with my peers.
Climate
Exploring "Yale's Climate Connections" Website Resources
I will spend at least (___) minute(s) exploring Yale's Climate Connections Website, filled with articles and radio segments on a range of issues related to the climate crisis, and with share with others through my team feed, social media, or conversations with my peers.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Paul Lamar 4/29/2020 2:35 PMThanks to Anne Erling for coordinating this alternative to the traditional Yale Day of Service. I enjoyed the opportunity to reflect and to imagine that I could, however incrementally, change some behaviors. -
Paul Lamar 4/16/2020 4:30 AMI'm finding it rather easy to do activities I set out for myself to do. It's time to add another one, which I will pick later today. -
Paul Lamar 4/09/2020 5:51 AMWhile Ecochallenge's focus may be specifically on Earth Day issues, I can't help thinking that a mention of COVID-19 is in order: it's relevant, and scarily so, to our entire planet.
So maybe this is a call for dialogue. I shopped yesterday at Hannaford, wearing a mask and gloves. Other shoppers wore them, too. But the checkout folks on that particular shift were not wearing any protection.
I called the manager when I got home to inquire about the store's policy, which says that such protection is optional--that is, if doing so feels comfortable to the employee. I was disappointed when I heard this take on the situation.
I spoke to a friend this morning, who said that workers at Sam's Club were protected when he visited the other day.
Thoughts? Advice? Thanks for reading and considering.-
Matt A 4/15/2020 2:44 PMI have also experienced this and it is very worrisome that people are taking the matter so lightly. Checkouts should also be equipped with sneeze guards (plastic barriers). I applaud you for bringing the matter to the attention of the manager. Public demand will encourage action. Maybe it’s time to notify the corporate level via social media?!

Paul Lamar 4/05/2020 5:27 AMThe funny thing is I feel totally self-conscious about doing this challenge, but I suppose that's the whole point: lifting to awareness one's behavior. So if I see what I committed to doing and determine whether or not I've done it, that's not a bad way to be in the world. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Reduce Animal ProductsWhy do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?
Paul Lamar 4/05/2020 5:23 AMWealthy countries can produce ready-made foods. Eating meat is convenient: packaged hot dogs, frozen chicken products, hunks of beef one can pat into a burger. Plus many of us had childhoods in which meat was de rigeur. So to change behavior requires thought and time.

Paul Lamar 4/03/2020 6:57 AMThanks, Anne, for organizing this unusual Yale Day of Service. Reading about the challenges every day will force me to think more critically than I ordinarily would about what I do/don't do for the sake of the planet. A lot of room for improvement!
