Victoria's actions
Wildlife
Use Reusable Bags
Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals. If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.
Fresh Water
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 6 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Fresh Water
Water-Friendly Beauty Products
Avoid beauty products with micro beads or harsh chemicals that will feed into the ground and your water supply.
Oceans
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When marine wildlife ingest plastic, they have a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 2 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Forests
Use a Reusable Mug
If possible, I will avoid sending 2 disposable cup(s) to the landfill each day by using a reusable mug.
Action Track: Earth Day Together!
Earth Day Action: Share Eco Tips
Through social media or on the Earth Day Ecochallenge feed, I will share my favorite environmentally friendly habit with my friends, even if it’s not an Earth Day action.
Wildlife
Research Benefits of Biodiversity
I will spend at least 30 minutes researching how biodiversity positively impacts our world and how the loss of biodiversity harms it.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Victoria Valero 4/23/2020 6:10 PMChallenges are going great. I am a little more tired today so it was kind of difficult but I was able to get through it. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Earth Day Together! Earth Day Action: Share Eco TipsWhat environmentally friendly habit have you most recently implemented? How do you ensure that you are successful in creating or changing a habit?
Victoria Valero 4/23/2020 6:09 PMAn environmentally friendly habit I have most recently implemented is using reusable items such as silicon straws, aluminum water bottles, tote bags for groceries, and little rags instead of paper napkins/towels. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlife Research Benefits of BiodiversityHow can you encourage biodiversity by your own actions?
-
Victoria Valero 4/10/2020 3:23 PMMy challenge is going fantastic. I find myself learning more about saving and caring for the environment then I ever thought I would. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFresh Water Use a Reusable Water BottleUsing the links provided, investigate the bottling practices of water corporations. There have been many cases where the water rights of the local people have been violated or even completely disregarded when a corporation decides to bottle water from a particular water source. How can you advocate for those who have been harmed - both humans and wildlife - by this bottling process?
Victoria Valero 4/10/2020 2:10 PMI can advocate for those who have been harmed by water corporations by using/buying less plastic water bottles, informing others of water rights that are violated by these corporations, and learning more about how my local area may be being affected as well. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONForests Use a Reusable MugMaybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reusable one, but it's just hard to make the switch. What stands in your way of making this a habit? By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?
Victoria Valero 4/10/2020 2:05 PMWhat may stand in my way of making this a habit is making sure to remember to use my reusable mug/cup or take it with me. But I feel good with the effort I made today in trying to make a small difference. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlife Use Reusable BagsWhat do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?
Victoria Valero 4/10/2020 1:58 PMI could try to make a habit of reusing plastic bags I get from stores and keep them in my pocket or purse or reuse old backpacks or cheap totes. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFresh Water Water-Friendly Beauty ProductsBeyond what does or doesn't come out of the tap at home, how do your choices affect freshwater locally and globally?
Victoria Valero 4/10/2020 1:48 PMI believe my choices and other people's choices are what can affect our freshwater locally. By deciding to dump or neglect unwanted food/waste, pesticides, chemicals, etc. can really affect our waters. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONOceans Say No to Plastic StrawsWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Victoria Valero 4/10/2020 1:46 PMSingle-use items I tend to regularly use I suppose are plastic straws and plastic bags. I understand the impact that these items can have on the environment and I desperately want to change that. I have researched ways to replace these items and I have found that a good alternative for straws is bamboo straws and silicon straws. As for plastic bags, I have seen people using old tote bags they may have collected over the years and even backpacks sometimes. I really do want to make a difference and I think taking the first step into using alternatives for singe-use items is a good first step.
