Dustin's actions
Food
Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
I will watch 1 documentary(ies) about food sovereignty: the right of local peoples to control their own food systems including markets, ecological resources, food cultures and production methods.
Climate
My Carbon Footprint
Use an online tool (links below) to calculate my carbon footprint and see what changes would make the most difference. Each calculator varies, but you'll typically need to gather: utility records, the flight history for the last year, and annual mileage and fuel efficiency of your vehicles.
Climate
Local Climate Issues
I will spend at least 10 minute(s) a day researching climate issues or climate solutions in my local area and share with others through my team feed, social media, or conversations with my peers.
Climate
Energy savings for the home office
Now that we're all working from home, energy bills could go up. Take some time to evaluate your home office space (even if it's the kitchen table!). Many utilities offer home efficiency kits (LED bulbs, shower heads, etc.) - visit your electric utilities website to see if they offer any of these solutions. The links below will also help you find energy efficiency opportunities in your own space.
Food
Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
I will spend at least 15 minutes learning how to differentiate between sell by, use by, and best by dates.
Forests
Plant Trees
I will plant 80 native tree(s) in my community, public parks, or backyard.
Food
Eat fresh from my garden
Eat part or all of a meal each day from my own garden!
Action Track: Earth Day Together!
Earth Day Action: Share Eco Tips
Through social media or on the Earth Day Ecochallenge feed, I will share my favorite environmentally friendly habit with my friends, even if it’s not an Earth Day action.
Action Track: Earth Day Together!
Earth Day Action: Write a Love Letter, Poem, or Song to Earth
I will express my love and gratitude for our Earth by writing a love letter, poem, or song to Earth.
Action Track: Earth Day Together!
Earth Day Action: Research and Support Local Organizations
I will spend 10 minutes researching local organizations and businesses in my community, then support one of them by writing a testimonial or positive review, ordering curbside, making a donation to my favorite nonprofit, or supporting them in another way.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate My Carbon FootprintWhat was most surprising to you about your carbon footprint?

REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate Local Climate IssuesIn what ways is your local community resilient to shock events like we’ve experienced recently? How could you help it become more resilient?
Dustin Lavender 4/30/2020 9:26 AMMy community is resilient in that we have been able to use the resources around us to ensure everyone has been fed, emotionally and spiritually.
I think by instilling the knowledge and ability of people to build sustainable food sources in their community and even their own backyards, people can gain a sense of security and self confidence in scenarios such as these -
REFLECTION QUESTIONForests Plant TreesHow is planting trees good for your mental, physical, and spiritual health?
Dustin Lavender 4/30/2020 9:24 AMWe have planted so many trees and food producing plants in our garden and in our community that i am amazed at how simple traditional food production is and how few people do it. i mean trees grow, with little to no input from me, and they produce fruit.
My wife and I started The Orchard Project 4 years ago and we have been so blessed mentally and spiritually by the endeavor to build community and provide sustainable long term food sources.-
Dustin Lavender 5/01/2020 12:05 PMThe cool thing is that it isn’t just our orchard. We planted it as a community garden, free and open to the community. It has 1/4 mile of walking trail, benches, blueberry, mulberry, peach, apple, pear, apricot, and plum. It also has an herb garden in it. -
Courtney Groszhans 5/01/2020 11:42 AMThat is awesome! Thank you for sharing! I just watched a documentary on Hulu called The Biggest Little Farm about how they are growing food sustainability and traditionally, it was fascinating. That is really inspiring that you and your family have your own orchard.

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Earth Day Together! Earth Day Action: Write a Love Letter, Poem, or Song to EarthWhat are you grateful for about our planet? Share what you created or your general thoughts of love and gratitude with everyone else!
Dustin Lavender 4/30/2020 9:19 AMI am grateful for our planet’s ability to produce. It literally why fruits and veggies are called produce. While we can improve production of fruits and vegetables, we do not produce them, the earth does. Awe and wonder. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Earth Day Together! Earth Day Action: Share Eco TipsWhat environmentally friendly habit have you most recently implemented? How do you ensure that you are successful in creating or changing a habit?
Dustin Lavender 4/30/2020 9:18 AMI have begun to reuse more things on my house before recycling. One things my wife and I have done since school has been out, is to save the lid portion from takeout boxes to use as snack trays later in the day instead of just tossing the whole container or using a plate that then needs to be washed.
I think to change or create a habit requires intention and repution. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Earth Day Together! Earth Day Action: Research and Support Local OrganizationsWhy is it important to support local organizations and businesses? How does it help to build a more resilient community?
Dustin Lavender 4/23/2020 10:14 AMI think by supporting local organizations and businesses, not only do we lower the amount of waste created by travel and food transportation, but it also encourages food to be grown locally, increasing local economies. -
Dustin Lavender 4/15/2020 6:25 AMshould be receiving more plants to put in at the community orchard today.
