Seek Alternative Gifts and Souvenirs
Bringing home unique souvenirs from trips you’ve enjoyed is meaningful, and giving people unique gifts from other places is fun. Seek souvenirs and gifts that support local communities and do not cause harm to the environment or wildlife.
People
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 2 piece(s) of litter each day while following the CDC’s current guidelines for prevention of disease transfer.
Action Track: Earth Day Together!
Earth Day Action: Share Eco Tips
Through social media or on the Earth Day Ecochallenge feed, I will share my favorite environmentally friendly habit with my friends, even if it’s not an Earth Day action.
Food
Compost Food Waste
I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to the landfill each day by composting my food or learning how to.
Wildlife
Leave No Trace
I will respect and protect biotic communities by practicing the seven principles of Leave No Trace when doing nature activities alone or with family and friends.
Wildlife
Research a Wild Animal
I will spend at least 10 minutes learning about a wild animal I find interesting, including their life cycle, habitat, ecosystem functions, and interactions with humans (if any!).
Wildlife
Support Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators, including monarch butterflies, to produce fruit. I will spend 10 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.
Oceans
Advocate For More Packaging Options
Plastic packaging can clog our water ways and the stomachs of sea creatures. I will advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, markets, at work, or on campus.
Oceans
Support Organic Growing Methods
I will buy organic cotton and foods grown without the use of synthetic nitrogen fertilizers.
Forests
Choose Better Wood Products
I will only purchase wood and paper products from ecologically certified sources like Forest Stewardship Council.

REFLECTION QUESTIONOceans Support Organic Growing MethodsIt is often said that “you can’t feed the world with just organic food.” What is your response to that statement?
Osofa'imalo Leota 4/30/2020 4:38 PMWell, most people don't have access to organic food around the world. If they do, it's not in their budget. I think that organic food is very good for you because there aren't any chemicals, and I think that there is more to this subject that what the sentence is claiming. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONOceans Advocate For More Packaging OptionsWhat concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.
Osofa'imalo Leota 4/30/2020 4:29 PMI am most concerned about pollution. It is outraging the amount of plastic and trash that is being incorrectly disposed of. Even though we all know it's a problem, we still haven't done enough about it. I think that we should cut it off at the start. No more plastic water bottle factories or plastic bag factories. If those were shut down there would be a huge difference. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONForests Choose Better Wood ProductsBeyond carbon sequestration, what other benefits do forests offer you personally?
Osofa'imalo Leota 4/30/2020 4:11 PMPersonally, the forest is a place where I can get fresh air and feel better if i'm feeling down or haven't gotten outside enough. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlife Leave No TraceEducator Stephanie Kaza advises her students to focus on what they care about most when addressing the enormity of ecological problems. Is there a specific area you feel particularly called to work on?
Osofa'imalo Leota 4/27/2020 2:26 PMI feel that a very important ecological problem is animal abuse in the agricultural industry. Not only is it terrible to treat millions of animal less than life, but it also has other impacts. If industries ignore laws criminalizing animal abuse, factory farms increase production to unnaturally high levels causing climate change, water shortages, loss of topsoil, and more. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlife Support PollinatorsWhy is it important to take care of pollinators?
Osofa'imalo Leota 4/27/2020 2:20 PMIt is important to take care of pollinators because not only are they living feeling organisms, but they have a very important job that we benefit from. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlife Research a Wild AnimalWhat interesting facts did you learn about the animal you researched? What are some of your favorite things about this animal?
Osofa'imalo Leota 4/27/2020 2:18 PMI researched blue whales. I love how big and graceful these aquatic animals are. They can be very friendly and non violent, and they can also be very dangerous. They are very powerful. It is the largest animal to live. -
