Melissa's Actions
People
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 5 piece(s) of litter each day while following the CDC’s current guidelines for prevention of disease transfer.
Wildlife
Support Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators, including monarch butterflies, to produce fruit. I will spend 120 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.
Wildlife
Seek Alternative Gifts and Souvenirs
Bringing home unique souvenirs from trips you’ve enjoyed is meaningful, and giving people unique gifts from other places is fun. Seek souvenirs and gifts that support local communities and do not cause harm to the environment or wildlife.
Food
Weekly Meal Planning
I will reduce food waste and save money by prepping for 3 meal(s) each day, only buying the ingredients I need.
Food
Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
I will spend at least 60 minutes learning how to differentiate between sell by, use by, and best by dates.
Food
Reduce Animal Products
I will enjoy 1 meatless meal(s) and/or 1 vegan meal(s) each day of the challenge.
Fresh Water
Eco-friendly Gardening
I will plant native species, landscape with water-efficient plants, and use eco-friendly fertilizers.

Reflection QuestionFood Learn the Truth About Expiration DatesHow does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?
Melissa Lewis 4/22/2020 1:33 PMFrom what I learned about the differences between best by, sell by, and use by dates, I can make more informed decisions on purchasing and consuming. I believe that I can avoid trashing some food that is still actually good enough to consume past its sell by/best by dates. -
Reflection QuestionWildlife Seek Alternative Gifts and SouvenirsHow do your consumption choices affect the health of wildlife and other communities?
Melissa Lewis 4/13/2020 3:29 PMWhen needing to buy gifts I try to find ways to reduce buying material items that often just end up in the landfill, and instead give a gift of an adventure or event. For example, starting with last Easter, the Easter bunny brings my daughter seeds that she can help me plant in our yard. This gives us an event to bond over, but also is a gift that benefits us, the bees, the butterflies, and our community! -
Reflection QuestionFresh Water Eco-friendly GardeningWhat are the most prominent water concerns in your area? Examples include drought, flooding, pollution, access, security, and privatization.
Melissa Lewis 4/10/2020 12:17 PMI am currently spending my COVID-19 quarantine days at my mom's house in San Diego and although it has decided to rain today, we wanted to be conscious about finding drought-resistant plants since summer is going to come quickly! My brother is a succulent farmer, so we consulted with him and got some succulents and various cactus varieties. My mom and my 3-year old daughter helped create a 3-tiered succulent garden on the side of the yard! It turned out super cute!
