Jade's actions
Oceans
Learn about Our Oceans
I will spend at least 5 minutes learning about how our oceans support life on Earth by producing oxygen, regulating climate, and providing habitat, food, and jobs.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Research Benefits of Biodiversity
I will spend at least 10 minutes researching how biodiversity positively impacts our world and how the loss of biodiversity harms it.
Forests
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area while following CDC guidelines for social distancing.
Fresh Water
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 3 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Food
Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
I will spend at least 10 minutes learning how to differentiate between sell by, use by, and best by dates.
Wildlife
Research a Wild Animal
I will spend at least 7 minutes learning about a wild animal I find interesting, including their life cycle, habitat, ecosystem functions, and interactions with humans (if any!).
Forests
Use a Reusable Mug
If possible, I will avoid sending 2 disposable cup(s) to the landfill each day by using a reusable mug.
Wildlife
Support Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators, including monarch butterflies, to produce fruit. I will spend 10 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 60 minute(s) each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside that follows CDC guidelines for preventing disease spread.
People
Connect While Social Distancing
I will connect with at least 2 person/people a day through phone call or video chat to support mine and other’s mental and emotional health during this challenging time.
Forests
Forest-Friendly Foods
I will replace or remove the palm oil, coffee, and cocoa products in my current diet that are known to contribute to deforestation.
Wildlife
Use Reusable Bags
Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals. If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONForests Forest-Friendly FoodsHow difficult or easy was it to change your diet?
Jade Lovio 4/27/2020 3:46 PMChanging my diet wasn't too difficult because I already dont drink coffee but trying to not use palm oil is hard because it is in almost everything that we use. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONOceans Learn about Our OceansWhat is one way in which oceans support your life on Earth? What is one way you can help take care of ocean health with your actions?
Jade Lovio 4/16/2020 4:05 PMThe ocean supports our life on earth because it helps regulate the earths temperature and 50% to 70% of the world's oxygen comes from the oceans. One way that I can help take care of the ocean is by picking up trash so it doesn't get blown by the wind into rivers that can eventually lead to the ocean. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlife Research a Wild AnimalWhat interesting facts did you learn about the animal you researched? What are some of your favorite things about this animal?
Jade Lovio 4/14/2020 12:13 PMI researched the animal the kakapo which is a type of parrot found in New Zealand. The kakapo is the only type of parrot that can't fly so some people call it the owl parrot or night parrot. This animal is very endangered with only 154 in 2017. This is because when startled they freeze to blend in with the surroundings which works with sight predators but with animals that rely on their sense of smell they have no other form of defense. My favorite thing that I learned is that they are friendly and European settlers kept them as pets. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONForests Use a Reusable MugMaybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reusable one, but it's just hard to make the switch. What stands in your way of making this a habit? By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?
Jade Lovio 4/12/2020 11:58 AMKnowing that I am making a difference makes me feel better because you know you are helping the planet. Also, it's a simple thing to do so if you use a reusable cup each day it can add up quickly. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONForests Explore My AreaHow can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place?
Jade Lovio 4/08/2020 10:15 AMSpending more time outside can enhance your sense of place because you will know what's around you more. By exploring new hiking trails you are getting to know wildlife and plants that may live and grow in your area. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Research Benefits of BiodiversityHow can you encourage biodiversity by your own actions?
Jade Lovio 4/08/2020 9:40 AMI can encourage biodiversity by planting plants that attract different species like bees. By helping bees they can pollinate the flower which then other animals will benefit from. Also by buying products that dont harm other species. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlife Support PollinatorsWhy is it important to take care of pollinators?
Jade Lovio 4/02/2020 11:29 AMIt is important to take care of pollinators because they are what helps plants grow. Some examples of plants they help to grow are coffee, blueberries, avocados and more. They also help maintain ecosystems that other animals live in. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Learn the Truth About Expiration DatesHow does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?
Jade Lovio 4/01/2020 11:00 AMKnowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower me to make better decisions because you want to buy the food you can use all of before throwing it away because it has expired. Also to know that some foods can be consumed after the use-by date so if you are about to finish eating something then its okay too because if it smells and looks fine then its okay to eat it a couple of days after. So I can make better decisions about not wasting food because of the expiration date. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFresh Water Use a Reusable Water BottleUsing the links provided, investigate the bottling practices of water corporations. There have been many cases where the water rights of the local people have been violated or even completely disregarded when a corporation decides to bottle water from a particular water source. How can you advocate for those who have been harmed - both humans and wildlife - by this bottling process?
Jade Lovio 4/01/2020 10:26 AMWe can advocate for humans and wildlife by spreading awareness and not purchasing and giving money to the companies that make that plastic bottles. We also need to call and talk to people who can stop making the bottled water like the company Nestle.
