Whale sharks are the largest fish in the world and despite their name which may get people confused, they are a type of shark. They have over 3,000 tiny teeth even though they are filter feeders and their diet consists of small phytoplankton. I personally love whale sharks because they have very beautiful markings and even though they are large, they are very gentle creatures.

    Oceans Smart Seafood Choices
Many states and countries have advisories on eating fish. Find out what is advised for your region. Do you think your diet choices fall within these guidelines? What steps do you need to take to make sure that they do?

I don't typically eat a lot of seafood but the list of best choices, good alternatives, and what to avoid really opened my eyes. I have realized that I should think about my decisions when out to eat more often. For example, Mahi Mahi and Salmon depending on where it comes from are not the best choices. From now on I will use the seafood watch app to easily access the list of advised choices to try to choose a better option, become more educated, and prevent myself from supporting unsustainable fisheries.

How difficult or easy was it to change your diet?

I decided to cut coffee out of my diet. This was a fairly easy thing to change as I am no longer at school, I am getting plenty of rest in quarantine, and I am trying to cut sugary drinks out of my diet anyways.

I'm grateful for the beauty, mystery, and life our planet gives us. I'm grateful for ecosystem services and resources it provides and i'm grateful for the space it gives me to be creative and adventurous. Without nature I would be lost.

Food Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
How does food sovereignty address the complex agrarian transition to modern food systems?

    Lexi Ludwig's avatar
    Lexi Ludwig 4/28/2020 12:06 PM
Food sovereignty addresses the complex agrarian transition to modern food systems. It does so by giving the market the ability to influence agricultural production. This will lead to the mechanisms of food production to be altered and less food waste produced. This will lead to modern food systems in which are more sustainable.

How does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?

    Lexi Ludwig 4/28/2020 12:00 PM
Knowing the differences between use by, sell by, and best by dates allow me to make better decisions on whether or not certain products are still good and useable. This will allow me to waste less food and other things as well as save money.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Building Resilience Spend Time Outside
Rachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?

    Lexi Ludwig's avatar
    Lexi Ludwig 4/28/2020 11:48 AM
Yes, this quote from Rachel Carson does ring true to me. Personally, I could not imagine life without spending time outside and learning and seeing new things within nature. I think the current generation will see implications due to the lack of time they spend outside. These days, people would rather sit inside on their phone all day then experience new things. This will create people who are less emotionally and spiritually attached to nature and will lead to less people caring about what happens within their communities - especially regarding the state of the environment.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Fresh Water Use a Reusable Water Bottle
Using the links provided, investigate the bottling practices of water corporations. There have been many cases where the water rights of the local people have been violated or even completely disregarded when a corporation decides to bottle water from a particular water source. How can you advocate for those who have been harmed - both humans and wildlife - by this bottling process?

    Lexi Ludwig's avatar
    Lexi Ludwig 4/28/2020 11:43 AM
The bottling processes of many water corporations such as that of Zephyr Hill, usually has harmful effects on the local wildlife, environment, and even people. As Florida's natural springs get depleted from large corporations, it is leaving less and less resources for the local people and wildlife. It is also altering the natural ecosystems. To advocate for those being harmed, you could boycott companies such as these or use filtered tap water and a reusable water bottle (which is even better).
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Fresh Water Conserve Toilet Water
What would a sustainable water future in your region look like? What needs to change?

    Lexi Ludwig's avatar
    Lexi Ludwig 4/28/2020 11:36 AM
I think a more sustainable water future in my region would require new technology such as energy efficient and water saving devices. Also, it is important for people to realize the individual impact the have on our water supply. If everyone took shorter showers, only did laundry/dishes when full or necessary, and if people turned off the tap when not in use, etc. we would save a lot more water as a whole. These are such small differences and changes but it would do a lot for the environment.

Action Track: Earth Day Together! Earth Day Action: Research and Support Local Organizations
Why is it important to support local organizations and businesses? How does it help to build a more resilient community?

    Lexi Ludwig's avatar
    Lexi Ludwig 4/24/2020 3:57 PM
It is important to support local organizations and businesses because it helps support the local community and economy. It also is more environmentally friendly as you are not supporting large corporations which usually contribute a lot more to the carbon footprint and pollution levels. It helps build a more resilient community as it supports local people and puts money into the local community while not relying on products from around the globe.
