Sarah's actions
People
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 1 piece(s) of litter each day while following the CDC’s current guidelines for prevention of disease transfer.
Wildlife
Use Reusable Bags
Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals. If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.
Climate
Choose LED Bulbs
I will replace 4 incandescent lightbulb(s) with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
People
Join a Cleanup Effort
I will host or participate in a beach, highway, river, or other cleanup effort in my community that follows the CDC’s current guidelines for prevention of disease transfer.
Fresh Water
Conserve Toilet Water
I will save up to 12 gallons (45 L) of water a day by flushing only when necessary.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlife Use Reusable BagsWhat do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?
Sarah Maas 4/30/2020 2:04 PMWith the coronavirus restrictions, most places have stopped letting you use reusable bags. At Trader Joe's I just have them put the things back in the cart, then I can put them in my bags at my car. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate Choose LED BulbsChanging lightbulbs is an excellent first step toward energy efficiency! In what other ways can you exercise your civic duty to protect the environment and reduce carbon emissions?

REFLECTION QUESTIONPeople Keep My Community CleanHow does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?
Sarah Maas 4/30/2020 2:01 PMBecause I get to see what people throw out the windows or their cars or let blow out of their trash? If anything, I feel more disconnected because I feel that my community doesn't care about how much trash it is producing or how much is going to the landfill. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFresh Water Conserve Toilet WaterWhat would a sustainable water future in your region look like? What needs to change?
Sarah Maas 4/30/2020 2:00 PMI really dislike that everyone thinks they need to have a green lawn. And to keep it green, it needs a certain amount of water every day. Why not plant drought-resistant or native grasses? A mono-culture is not a sustainable culture and it isn't very interesting. I would much rather see prairie grass than a green lawn. -
Sarah Maas 4/08/2020 7:06 AMWith the corona virus pandemic, stores have stopped letting people use reusable bags from home. It is very disappointing.-
Melanie Stewart 4/08/2020 11:44 AMI don't want to minimize infection control, but it seems like an over-reaction to me. The skeptic in me thinks it's the plastic industry pushing back, knowing (bad) habits will be created again, but maybe it's a good idea.....
