Jada's actions
Oceans
Learn about Our Oceans
I will spend at least 15 minutes learning about how our oceans support life on Earth by producing oxygen, regulating climate, and providing habitat, food, and jobs.
People
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 45 minute(s) each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside that follows CDC guidelines for preventing disease spread.
Fresh Water
Water-Friendly Beauty Products
Avoid beauty products with micro beads or harsh chemicals that will feed into the ground and your water supply.
Food
Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
I will watch 1 documentary(ies) about food sovereignty: the right of local peoples to control their own food systems including markets, ecological resources, food cultures and production methods.
Fresh Water
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 3 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Wildlife
Use Reusable Bags
Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals. If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.
Fresh Water
Dishwasher Efficiency
I will scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading into the dishwasher and only run the dishwasher when it’s full.
Forests
Forest-Friendly Foods
I will replace or remove the palm oil, coffee, and cocoa products in my current diet that are known to contribute to deforestation.
People
Earth Day Action: Share Eco Tips
Through social media or on the Earth Day Ecochallenge feed, I will share my favorite environmentally friendly habit with my friends, even if it’s not an Earth Day action.
People
Earth Day Action: Research and Support Local Organizations
I will spend 15 minutes researching local organizations and businesses in my community, then support one of them by writing a testimonial or positive review, ordering curbside, making a donation to my favorite nonprofit, or supporting them in another way.
Fresh Water
Eco-friendly Gardening
I will plant native species, landscape with water-efficient plants, and use eco-friendly fertilizers.
Food
Advocate For More Food Options
Access to affordable, nutritious food is a food justice issue. I will advocate for local and/or organic food options in my state and/or community.
Climate
Choose Renewable Energy or Purchase Renewable Energy Credits
I will sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option. If my utility does not offer one, I will purchase Renewable Energy Credits to match my usage.
Climate
Earth Day Action: Write a Love Letter, Poem, or Song to Earth
I will express my love and gratitude for our Earth by writing a love letter, poem, or song to Earth.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Research Benefits of Biodiversity
I will spend at least 15 minutes researching how biodiversity positively impacts our world and how the loss of biodiversity harms it.

Jada Matthews 4/26/2020 1:58 PMToday is a nice day outside so I spent longer than I usually do outside. I've also ben using my reusable water bottle so about 12 plastic water bottles haven't been sent to the landfills because I drink about 4 a day. -
Jada Matthews 4/24/2020 4:18 PMMy challenges are going perfectly fine! I hope to continue doing what I'm doing with my challenges even after the eco challenge is done. -
Jada Matthews 4/21/2020 9:18 PMToday was the longest I stayed outside since we started the eco challenge. I spent 40 minutes outside instead of being in front of a screen. 240 minutes in total since the eco challenge started. -
Jada Matthews 4/20/2020 8:39 PMMy challenges are going great. I'm doing more than I expected I would do or thought I would do before I actually started the challenge.-

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Research Benefits of BiodiversityHow can you encourage biodiversity by your own actions?
Jada Matthews 4/19/2020 9:47 PMI can encourage biodiversity by supporting the birds, mammals, and plants that live in my neighborhood. I can also help and protect beaches, parks, reserves, and fields where wild plants and animals live. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Advocate For More Food OptionsWhat efforts would help food insecure regions have access to local, seasonal foods?
Jada Matthews 4/19/2020 9:05 PMPeople who are in the position to donate a lot of fruits, vegetables and can goods can help out those who aren't necessarily wealthy and other people can come together and make investments in things like food pantry's and pass out seasonal foods like they do at my granny's church.-
kerstin taylor 4/19/2020 9:39 PMHi Jada, I agree completely. There are a lot of people that are more than capable of donating goods to those who don't have them. A lot of us are blessed with more than we need and should definitely practice giving back to others. It could be as simple as donating the canned goods in our cupboards that we don't even like.

REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate Earth Day Action: Write a Love Letter, Poem, or Song to EarthWhat are you grateful for about our planet? Share what you created or your general thoughts of love and gratitude with everyone else!
Jada Matthews 4/19/2020 7:14 PMI am mostly grateful for it's natural beauty and it's diversity. I believe diversity is very important and I don't think people appreciate or even pay attention to the beauty of our planet enough. Gratitude is important because it helps people feel more positive emotions, improves health in some cases, deals with adversity and even builds strong relationships. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate Choose Renewable Energy or Purchase Renewable Energy CreditsYour utility company is able to tell you your average energy usage. Ask them how your energy usage compares to others in your ZIP code, region, and/or state. What other steps can you take each day to reduce your electricity usage?
Jada Matthews 4/19/2020 7:09 PMUnplugging things that aren't being used. Chargers, lamps, flat irons, irons, etc. Also, shut down computers and turn off TV's if they aren't being used. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFresh Water Eco-friendly GardeningWhat are the most prominent water concerns in your area? Examples include drought, flooding, pollution, access, security, and privatization.
Jada Matthews 4/19/2020 6:46 PMThe most prominent water concern in my area is flooding. A lot of the time when it rains a lot in my neighborhood, many basements in the area tend to blood because of all of the rain and then pipes burst.
