Research Benefits of Biodiversity

I will spend at least 40 minutes researching how biodiversity positively impacts our world and how the loss of biodiversity harms it.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Building Resilience

Spend Time Outside

I will replace 60 minute(s) each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside that follows CDC guidelines for preventing disease spread.

Forests

Explore My Area

I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area while following CDC guidelines for social distancing.

COMPLETED

Action Track: Building Resilience

Support Pollinators

At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators, including monarch butterflies, to produce fruit. I will spend 30 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.

Good! I got to learn about so many different animals and communities that contribute to the way our world is. I’m learning the education is such a powerful tool in this generation. I also went for a walk and saw some beautiful things! Gotta love the way the Lord made nature IT IS BEAUTIFUL!

    Wildlife Research Benefits of Biodiversity
How can you encourage biodiversity by your own actions?

i think educating individuals and ourselves and researching the importance of the variety of habitats is majorly important. When we over look the importance of each area we think loosing any one of these habitats becomes okay. Biodiversity needs to stay protected. Biodiversity makes our world greater and beautiful. If we can protect these areas simply by reminding everyone why they are unique then it is worth taking the time to learn and to educate each other.

    Wildlife Use Reusable Bags
What do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?

The time I use plastic bags the most is at the grocery store when I buy food for the week. I do acquire a large amount of Walmart bags. One thing my family has started doing is going to aldis for the majority of our groceries. They do not use plastic bags when you purchase things. Then you can put your items ina reusable bag; my family used the cardboard boxes within the store to carry our food to the car. Then those boxes are put into the recycling bin to be reused. So for me as a student I could adapt that way of going grocery shopping

    Wildlife Research a Wild Animal
What interesting facts did you learn about the animal you researched? What are some of your favorite things about this animal?

I researched bats! I learned that bats contribute to pollination, seed distribution, and they can live up to 20 years. One of my favorite things about this animal is that they take care of insects by eating them. They are insectivores.  I also found it interesting that only 1% of bats are carnivores and can eat fish, mice, and even frogs. There’s also a few types of vampire bats that survive solely on drinking the blood of their prey... scary.

    People Support A Sharing Economy
What are the benefits of a sharing economy? How could a sharing economy change the dynamics you have with friends, family and/or neighbors?

    Breeanna Maze's avatar
    Breeanna Maze 4/22/2020 12:37 PM
The benefits of having a community that shares is tremendous! My family has always valued connections to our family friends, neighbors, and church community. By sharing we can save each other money, save levels of waste, while simultaneously contributing and building our relations.

    People Keep My Community Clean
How does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?

    Breeanna Maze 4/22/2020 12:34 PM
When the community is clean it makes people want to invest more time into the beautiful areas they can see. When people all want to spend time in one place, connections with people are made and therefore adding to the overall growth of the community. Cleaning our communities is not difficult and it causes so many positive aspects in life. It’s so worth it!

    Forests Explore My Area
How can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place?

    Breeanna Maze's avatar
    Breeanna Maze 4/22/2020 12:30 PM
Spending time outside connects you with the space around you 100%. When you go outside you get to experience and surround yourself with nature and the community around you. When we shut ourselves in doors we cut ourselves off from our community and the beautiful experiences we could have. I have been challenging myself to step outside and take advantage of everything around me rather than taking it for granted ever day.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Reduce Animal Products
Why do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?

    Breeanna Maze's avatar
    Breeanna Maze 4/22/2020 12:27 PM
The process of meat production contributes to pollution and fossil fuel usage. It also adds to the waste levels by discarding the parts of the animals we do not eat. Eating meat effects way more than just taking one cow out of our environment. I think people do not see every effect our simple choices make. Education is powerful in times where everything seems easy to obtain. We need to fully understand what our choices add or take away from the world.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Building Resilience Support Pollinators
Why is it important to take care of pollinators?

    Breeanna Maze's avatar
    Breeanna Maze 4/22/2020 12:22 PM
Pollination is a major part of having the food and resources we take for granted every day. Without pollination our crops suffer, food becomes scarce, and our world around us ultimately suffers. Animals that pollinate the earth contribute to the production of produce and food supply. These animals contribute to so much more than just having them around to enjoy them. They help the cycle of our environment including what we see and eat.
