Maggie's actions
Climate
Local Climate Issues
I will spend at least 5 minute(s) a day researching climate issues or climate solutions in my local area and share with others through my team feed, social media, or conversations with my peers.
People
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 8 minute(s) each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside that follows CDC guidelines for preventing disease spread.
People
Connect While Social Distancing
I will connect with at least 1 person/people a day through phone call or video chat to support mine and other’s mental and emotional health during this challenging time.
Fresh Water
Dishwasher Efficiency
I will scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading into the dishwasher and only run the dishwasher when it’s full.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Connect Local, Support Local
We encourage teammates to connect to other local green organizations (including each other) and practice supporting local businesses at least once a week. Re-share a post, order curbside, make a donation to your favorite non-profit, or find a local business to make a purchase from! Let’s keep making St. Louis a greener, healthier, and more sustainable place to live, work, and learn! Have other or more specific actions to add to the Connect Local, Support Local Building Resilience Challenge please email Fbrandt@mobot.org.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONFresh Water Dishwasher EfficiencyHow can your region/household prepare for changing water situations in order to become more resilient?
Maggie McCoy 4/14/2020 11:28 AMThe region can do so much so I will just focus on my household. I think we are very good about only running things like the dishwasher and the washing machine when they are full. Too much water in the house tends to be our problem. We installed a sump pump a couple years ago, but the water just gets pumped out front into the street. I want to learn about other ways to slow the flow of water so that we are not just putting a higher burden on our storm sewers while protecting our basement. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPeople Spend Time OutsideRachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?
Maggie McCoy 4/08/2020 11:50 AMI have been thinking about this question since reading Last Child in the Wood. Most of our time outside right now has been in our city neighborhood in our own backyard. We have been trying to find the wonder in nature there. It has been nice since we get to spend a lot of time looking at small things. Yesterday, we had the privilege of being able to see a snail come completely out of its shell - even its eye stalks unfurl. It was something I have never seen before and this time at home is giving us the time to appreciate these moments.
