Energy savings for the home office

Now that we're all working from home, energy bills could go up. Take some time to evaluate your home office space (even if it's the kitchen table!). Many utilities offer home efficiency kits (LED bulbs, shower heads, etc.) - visit your electric utilities website to see if they offer any of these solutions. The links below will also help you find energy efficiency opportunities in your own space.

My Carbon Footprint

Use an online tool (links below) to calculate my carbon footprint and see what changes would make the most difference. Each calculator varies, but you'll typically need to gather: utility records, the flight history for the last year, and annual mileage and fuel efficiency of your vehicles.

I had taken a more detailed look at purchasing carbon offsets and how it is translated to clean energy initiatives. I love to travel a lot by plane and oftentimes, I don't really think about the carbon emissions from those travels. Moving forward, I will be purchasing carbon offsets for my flights.

How does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?

I think having this knowledge would definitely reduce food waste, and enabling people to buy food or produce that may not look the most physically appealing but maintaining its nutritional value.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Building Resilience Spend Time Outside
Rachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?

This rings true to me since I love being outdoors, and it makes me feel so whole spiritually and emotionally. While being at home during this period, I could see my mood change a bit compared to when I'm able to freely go outside to take a walk or ride a bike. I definitely feel more enclosed, anxious and low energy when I am indoors too much. I am trying to balance that by taking walks more often during low traffic time periods.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Fresh Water Get Involved in the Water Justice Movement
Who is affected by polluted water or a lack of access to water in your region? How are they affected?

So many communities in Northern Ontario are affected by both the quality and lack of access to clean water, which is unacceptable because this does not happen in other municipalities across the Ontario and Canada. It's just sad to see communities suffering in "third world country" conditions while living in Canada.
