Beth's actions
Action Track: Earth Day Together!
Earth Day Action: Write a Love Letter, Poem, or Song to Earth
I will express my love and gratitude for our Earth by writing a love letter, poem, or song to Earth.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
I will watch 1 documentary(ies) about food sovereignty: the right of local peoples to control their own food systems including markets, ecological resources, food cultures and production methods.
Wildlife
Support Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators, including monarch butterflies, to produce fruit. I will spend 30 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.
People
Connecting Covid19 to Sustainabiility through Systems Thinking
I will work with my son on building a forum-based website for people to share ideas, projects and resources for teaching, action, research and responses that support community resilience to both Covid19 and to the sustainability needs of our world.
People
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 2 piece(s) of litter each day while following the CDC’s current guidelines for prevention of disease transfer.
People
Volunteer in my Community
I will volunteer 1 hour(s) in my community helping people who are most at need right now, including elderly and immunocompromised people, people without childcare, and people whose jobs have been affected by social distancing measures.
People
Connect While Social Distancing
I will connect with at least 2 person/people a day through phone call or video chat to support mine and other’s mental and emotional health during this challenging time.
People
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 30 minute(s) each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside that follows CDC guidelines for preventing disease spread.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Beth Mercer-Taylor 4/21/2020 6:54 PMI'm talking with a former student about how meaningful it was to be involved in pro-environmental and social justice work, and how to keep going in times of social distancing.-
Sofia Fick 4/28/2020 1:10 PMHey Beth!
I'm Sofia, and I'm the U of M Department of Sustainability intern this semester! As earth month and the eco challenge wrap up, I'm reaching out to some of the team members who have been extremely active throughout the challenge, in hopes of writing a little blog post for the Institute on the Environment about the participants! It would be amazing to start a little email exchange with you, to chat about who you are, why you've been so active, and what the eco challenge has brought to your life this month! Other topics of discussion are welcomed, of course. My email is fick0054@umn.edu. If you'd like to contact me, that's great! If not, and you'd prefer I contact you, I can do that! Just reply to this comment with your email. If you don't want to period, that's totally okay as well! Keep me posted, Both the earth and I are proud of your hard work this month:)

REFLECTION QUESTIONPeople Spend Time OutsideRachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?
Beth Mercer-Taylor 4/05/2020 1:23 PMSUCH A NICE DAY, and in MN the woodpeckers are fun to find right now. -
Beth Mercer-Taylor 4/05/2020 1:21 PMEnvironmental & sustainability commitments includes taking care of our very own species - humans. To help us survive Covid19, we need to take care of each other with personal protective equipment (PPE). I recommend supporting Project95, a well-organized non-profit "who has"/ "who needs" PPE matching effort, Project95, named for N95 masks, needs volunteers, funds & help spreading the word. https://www.projectn95.org -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPeople Keep My Community CleanHow does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?
Beth Mercer-Taylor 4/05/2020 1:14 PMPicking up litter does make me feel a little bit better. I'm especially concerned about our water, so I am focusing on cleaning up litter & leaves from storm drains.. -
Beth Mercer-Taylor 4/01/2020 10:14 AMDon't forget it is the start of Earth Month - AND APRIL FOOL'S DAY! -
Beth Mercer-Taylor 4/01/2020 10:13 AMHey everyone - Beth Mercer-Taylor with UMN Twin Cities Sustainability Education team here. Today I discovered how to reduce my family's carbon footprint to zero in a short time. I also figured out how to copy emails from google-invite meetings into the "invite teammates" ecochallenge email easily,so more people can join the UMN team. Happy April Fool's Day (no carbon footprint discovery)!
