Butterfly Fortress

I want to build shelter for butterflies and also have plants that will benefit the butterflies.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Wildlife

Support Pollinators

At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators, including monarch butterflies, to produce fruit. I will spend 15 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Wildlife

Use Reusable Bags

Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals. If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.

People

Spend Time Outside

I will replace 60 minute(s) each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside that follows CDC guidelines for preventing disease spread.

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

    Wildlife Support Pollinators
Why is it important to take care of pollinators?

Pollinators are the backbone of the food chain. If we don't take care of our pollinators then we will have to hand pollinate things which doesn't work as well.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Reduce Animal Products
Why do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?

I think that people in richer countries not only have better access to food but most of the population doesn't rely on livestock to make a living. I think that eating more meat provides more money to companies who mistreat their animals.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    People Spend Time Outside
Rachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?

It is absolutely true for me. When I am stuck inside during the winter and I can't go explore outside I find that my mental health is so much worse. In other months when I can go outside it brings me joy that I can't find doing anything else.
