Anna's actions

Action Track: Building Resilience

Spend Time Outside

I will replace 20 minute(s) each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside that follows CDC guidelines for preventing disease spread.

COMPLETED 0
DAILY ACTIONS

Climate

My Carbon Footprint

Use an online tool (links below) to calculate my carbon footprint and see what changes would make the most difference. Each calculator varies, but you'll typically need to gather: utility records, the flight history for the last year, and annual mileage and fuel efficiency of your vehicles.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate

Energy savings for the home office

Now that we're all working from home, energy bills could go up. Take some time to evaluate your home office space (even if it's the kitchen table!). Many utilities offer home efficiency kits (LED bulbs, shower heads, etc.) - visit your electric utilities website to see if they offer any of these solutions. The links below will also help you find energy efficiency opportunities in your own space.

COMPLETED

Local Climate Issues

I will spend at least 10 minute(s) a day researching climate issues or climate solutions in my local area and share with others through my team feed, social media, or conversations with my peers.

I will connect with at least 2 person/people a day through phone call or video chat to support mine and other’s mental and emotional health during this challenging time.

Use Reusable Bags

Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals. If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.

COMPLETED 0

Forests

Use a Reusable Mug

If possible, I will avoid sending 3 disposable cup(s) to the landfill each day by using a reusable mug.

Explore My Area

I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area while following CDC guidelines for social distancing.

Earth Day Action: Share Eco Tips

Through social media or on the Earth Day Ecochallenge feed, I will share my favorite environmentally friendly habit with my friends, even if it’s not an Earth Day action.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Building Resilience

Support Pollinators

At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators, including monarch butterflies, to produce fruit. I will spend 30 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Wildlife Use Reusable Bags
What do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?

When I forget, I try to fit small things into my purse and carry large things by hand. Usually this is sufficient - I also make an effort to be sure there is always at least one reusable bag in my car for times I forget.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Forests Use a Reusable Mug
Maybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reusable one, but it's just hard to make the switch. What stands in your way of making this a habit? By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?

I hate unnecessary waste - being able to ditch reusable cups without impacting my daily life makes me feel empowered.

    Forests Explore My Area
How can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place?

Being outdoors allows me to feel more centered, especially with all the craziness that has been going on recently. We discovered a beautiful wooded park area behind our neighborhood while taking this action.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
How does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?

    Anna Nadon's avatar
    Anna Nadon 4/30/2020 11:23 AM
It allows me to avoid paranoia about food I purchased being bad when really it is not - I can use more of what I purchase than I had realized, limiting the waste I create.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Building Resilience Support Pollinators
Why is it important to take care of pollinators?

    Anna Nadon's avatar
    Anna Nadon 4/30/2020 11:22 AM
Because they are necessary to life on the planet - last year we built two rain gardens with an eye to native plants, and a variety to flower throughout the year. This year, I am hoping to add a wildflower garden to help further support local pollinators.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Building Resilience Spend Time Outside
Rachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?

I have been loving my daily lunch time walks - great way to recenter and have a productive afternoon.

Starting today, I am making an active effort to carry a bag with me whenever I go walking so I can collect and dispose of loose trash.

I am counting on my husband and friends that I walk with to help me stay accountable.

That is awesome, great idea.  I just saw some earlier today near my neighborhood and thought to myself about when I am going to get a bag and go back after it!  And great mask by the way!

I was as actually disappointed in the calculators available - my husband and I have solar panels and two plug-in hybrid electric vehicles and there wasn't a really great way to factor that into the emissions calculators.
