Say No to Plastic Straws

An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When marine wildlife ingest plastic, they have a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 4 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.

It has been a busy couple days lately but I have been doing my best to complete all these actions for the environment!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Oceans Learn about Our Oceans
What is one way in which oceans support your life on Earth? What is one way you can help take care of ocean health with your actions?

One way that the oceans support my life on Earth is that it is the number one source of protein, and it provides me and a large amount of other people with fish and other foods. One way I can take care of the ocean health is by volunteering my time to pick up plastics and other trash at local beaches, to ensure that is stays clean.

Today I was able to research the different oceans of the world and their impact on us as well as the diversity of marine life. Very fascinating how we are all connected by one source! Just goes to show how we must protect it.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Forests Explore My Area
How can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place?

    Brady Newkirk's avatar
    Brady Newkirk 4/16/2020 4:24 PM
Spending time outdoors can lead to more and further interactions with nature. This will enhance my sense of place, as I can begin to realize my impact on the environment I surround myself in, and the more time outdoors will allow me to explore my place in the entire ecosystem and what role I serve.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Wildlife Support Pollinators
Why is it important to take care of pollinators?

    Brady Newkirk's avatar
    Brady Newkirk 4/16/2020 4:22 PM
It is important to take care of pollinators because they help speed up the fertilization process between plant anthers. They promote growth and spread of life. If pollinators are not protected, many of the autotroph populations will decrease, which can lead to the destruction of a whole ecosystem.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Wildlife Seek Alternative Gifts and Souvenirs
How do your consumption choices affect the health of wildlife and other communities?

    Brady Newkirk's avatar
    Brady Newkirk 4/16/2020 4:20 PM
Consumption choices can affect health of wildlife because if I were to choose an alternative to leather or fur, it can cause a ripple effect of conserving the wildlife that fall victims of hunting for fur or skin. If I choose to support wildlife through an alteration of my consumption based on alternatives to fur, then I can raise awareness to many communities to limit the hunting and preservation of wildlife.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Wildlife Research a Wild Animal
What interesting facts did you learn about the animal you researched? What are some of your favorite things about this animal?

    Brady Newkirk's avatar
    Brady Newkirk 4/15/2020 2:51 PM
Some interesting facts that I learned about the lion is that African lions are the most social type of lion and they live in groups called "prides", and that a lion's roar can be heard from as far as 5 miles away! Some of my favorite things about this animal is that a male lion defends the pride's territory while the female lions handle the majority of hunting, and the age of a lion can be based on the darkness of its mane. Plus it is a very majestic and beautiful animal.

Today I was able to look up and research my favorite wild animal, the Lion. I spent 30 minutes researching its habitat, mainly the Savannah, and different types of endangered lions that must be protected in Africa. A very valuable species!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
How does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?

    Brady Newkirk's avatar
    Brady Newkirk 4/14/2020 2:22 PM
Knowing this differentiation between the three dates allows me to know which food will taste, last, and look better than another. I am better aware of when I need to cook or consume those items and it allows me to safely make better decisions in regards to which ones I should purchase based on my plans for daily meals.
