Janet's actions
Wildlife
Seek Alternative Gifts and Souvenirs
Bringing home unique souvenirs from trips you’ve enjoyed is meaningful, and giving people unique gifts from other places is fun. Seek souvenirs and gifts that support local communities and do not cause harm to the environment or wildlife.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Get Involved in the Water Justice Movement
I will spend at least 60 minutes a day using the resources provided to learn about water justice and find out how I can get involved in local initiatives.
People
Connect While Social Distancing
I will connect with at least 2 person/people a day through phone call or video chat to support mine and other’s mental and emotional health during this challenging time.
Food
Weekly Meal Planning
I will reduce food waste and save money by prepping for 2 meal(s) each day, only buying the ingredients I need.
Food
Reduce Animal Products
I will enjoy 3 meatless meal(s) and/or 1 vegan meal(s) each day of the challenge.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 90 minute(s) each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside that follows CDC guidelines for preventing disease spread.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Janet Nunez 4/30/2020 6:28 AMI really enjoyed doing this challenge. I have learned so much and have become more aware of what I do. My actions and impact on the Earth will be reduced from now on. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Reduce Animal ProductsWhy do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?
Janet Nunez 4/30/2020 6:13 AMPeople is richer countries eat more meat because meat is mass produced there. Thousands of turkeys, for example, are raised all year and then slaughtered for Thanksgiving. Other countries use their animals for milk, transportation, warmth, or are sacred to their religions. Eating more meat affects the vegetation where these animals grow. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlife Seek Alternative Gifts and SouvenirsHow do your consumption choices affect the health of wildlife and other communities?
Janet Nunez 4/30/2020 6:07 AMMy consumption affects the health of wildlife because if I, for example, decide to eat meat, someone has had to kill an animal for me to eat. If I eat vegetables, someone has had to plant the vegetable and harvest it. What I eat is in constant connection with the other wildlife. -
Janet Nunez 4/29/2020 10:34 AMIt's raining and I love the rain. My cat really likes to go out into the backyard so I look him out for a while until it started to rain more. It felt nice to feel the rain. -
Janet Nunez 4/26/2020 7:23 PMI have been doing pretty well with this challenge. I have been planning my meals more than I did before and I spend more time outside as well. I have been able to slowly transition into being a vegetarian. I didn't eat much meat before, but I'm eating less of it now. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Weekly Meal PlanningAn average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Does this surprise you? Where would you rather use this money?
Janet Nunez 4/17/2020 10:48 AMThis doesn't surprise me. My mom would not plan meals when I was younger and in the end, we had so many left overs that they would eventually be thrown out. I'm not sure what I would use the money for. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Spend Time OutsideRachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?
Janet Nunez 4/17/2020 10:39 AMI do think it's true. Being outside makes me feel peaceful and calm. I think it's okay to be inside, but going outside, even if it's only for 30 minutes is great for the mind. It's great to step outside to smell the fresh air and relax for a while. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPeople Connect While Social DistancingHow does connecting with others help your own mental and emotional health? How can it help support others?
Janet Nunez 4/05/2020 10:50 PMConnecting with friends gets rid of stress and makes me happy. I am able to laugh and enjoy their company without risking each others' health. Connecting with them online makes me feel like I left the house without actually leaving; like I was physically hanging out with them.
