Cynthia's actions
Forests
Remove Invasive Species
Continue to remove invasive species (bush honeysuckle, callery pears, & garlic mustard) in my yard and farm. Trying foliar spray for small honeysuckle and mowing or pulling garlic mustard.
Action Track: Earth Day Together!
Earth Day Action: Share Eco Tips
Through social media or on the Earth Day Ecochallenge feed, I will share my favorite environmentally friendly habit with my friends, even if it’s not an Earth Day action.
Food
Growing Organically
Switching my home garden and orchard to using only organic labeled pesticides when needed.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Connect Local, Support Local
We encourage teammates to connect to other local green organizations (including each other) and practice supporting local businesses at least once a week. Re-share a post, order curbside, make a donation to your favorite non-profit, or find a local business to make a purchase from! Let’s keep making St. Louis a greener, healthier, and more sustainable place to live, work, and learn! Have other or more specific actions to add to the Connect Local, Support Local Building Resilience Challenge please email Fbrandt@mobot.org.
Wildlife
Support Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators, including monarch butterflies, to produce fruit. I will spend 100 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.
Fresh Water
Water-Friendly Beauty Products
Avoid beauty products with micro beads or harsh chemicals that will feed into the ground and your water supply.
Forests
Use a Reusable Mug
If possible, I will avoid sending 1 disposable cup(s) to the landfill each day by using a reusable mug.
Forests
Plant Trees
I will plant 100 native tree(s) in my community, public parks, or backyard.

Cynthia Pavelka 4/28/2020 8:52 AMPlanted amsonia, rudbeckia, marsh milkweed, and liastrus in a sunny spot in a bed that I've been working to convert to natives. Will go well with the redbuds, button bush & aromatic sumac that I had already planted. -
Cynthia Pavelka 4/24/2020 7:41 AMGetting my Mom's few apple trees back into production by pruning and applying pre-season scale preventer. Check out the blooms this week. -
Cynthia Pavelka 4/24/2020 7:22 AMSupported Kirkwood Gardens off of Barrett Station this week. Call or email crew@kirkwoodgardens.com to place order and purchase. Then drive up, call w/ order number and they fill your car. Great source of trees, shrubs, compost, soil, fertilizer and hardscape. Crew knows their plants and don't sell any invasive or potentially invasive species. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFresh Water Water-Friendly Beauty ProductsBeyond what does or doesn't come out of the tap at home, how do your choices affect freshwater locally and globally?
Cynthia Pavelka 4/17/2020 12:34 PMThis sounded a lot easier than it really is. Taking a college chemistry course doesn't even come close to the listing of all the various chemicals that are in our makeup. The elimination of plastic in the household and our clothes is overwhelming and I think I do fairly well as being environmentally conscious.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlife Support PollinatorsWhy is it important to take care of pollinators?
Cynthia Pavelka 4/17/2020 11:49 AMNever thought about flies being a pollinator. Planning to leave some bare soil in my yard this year for the burrowing native bees.
