Action Track: Earth Day Together! Earth Day Action: Share Eco Tips
What environmentally friendly habit have you most recently implemented? How do you ensure that you are successful in creating or changing a habit?

Most recently I have been paying attention to avoiding purchasing products that include palm oil as it is extremely harmful to the earth's rainforests. I make sure I am successful in this habit by making sure to read the ingredients of products before I consume/purchase them.

    Forests Forest-Friendly Foods
How difficult or easy was it to change your diet?

    Maya Phillips 4/17/2020 10:53 AM
It was a little difficult to change my diet but I tend to not eat super processed foods on the regular anyway so it wasn't too difficult, but doing this research definitely made me more aware of how what I consume effects the rainforests.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
How does food sovereignty address the complex agrarian transition to modern food systems?

    Maya Phillips's avatar
    Maya Phillips 4/07/2020 12:04 PM
Food sovereignty states that people producing and consuming food should control the mechanisms and policies of food distribution and production. This means that the transition to modern food systems will be regulated by the people involved in the food industry.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
How does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?

Use by dates are the amount of time a product has before it is no longer safe to eat. However, best-by dates are the amount of time that the product has before the quality is no longer "desirable", which means it isn't unsafe to eat and doesn't need to be wasted.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Reduce Animal Products
Why do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?

    Maya Phillips's avatar
    Maya Phillips 4/06/2020 12:46 PM
Meat is more expensive to produce and they take more water to raise, so it is typically richer countries that are eating the most meat. Meat production harms the environment and uses an immense amount of water.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Wildlife Leave No Trace
Educator Stephanie Kaza advises her students to focus on what they care about most when addressing the enormity of ecological problems. Is there a specific area you feel particularly called to work on?

I think protecting our forests and mountains is particularly important because they are what makes Asheville feel like home, so it's crucial that we are keeping them healthy. The native animals that live in these places also need it to stay healthy as well.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Building Resilience Spend Time Outside
Rachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?

Spending time outside with just your thoughts is a very therapeutic experience, one that many of us usually don't have the time to add to our daily lifestyles. I think that because everyone is so caught up in their fast-paced lives they often forget to slow down, so this is a great opportunity to do so while we're socially isolating.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Fresh Water Use a Reusable Water Bottle
Using the links provided, investigate the bottling practices of water corporations. There have been many cases where the water rights of the local people have been violated or even completely disregarded when a corporation decides to bottle water from a particular water source. How can you advocate for those who have been harmed - both humans and wildlife - by this bottling process?

    Maya Phillips's avatar
    Maya Phillips 4/02/2020 9:01 AM
You can boycott these companies by not purchasing their bottled water. If you are using a reusable water bottle anyways this shouldn't even be difficult! This means that you are helping the environment and helping bring down these companies simultaniously.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    People Connect While Social Distancing
How does connecting with others help your own mental and emotional health? How can it help support others?

Being stuck with your own thoughts all the time is not good for anyone, so it is very beneficial to stay in touch with the people you care about. It can help distract you from how frustrating self-isolation can be, and especially being an extroverted person it is really good for my mental health. It's also nice to get a call from your friends to know that they are thinking of you, so it's good to do the same to others.
