Tianni's actions
Wildlife
Research a Wild Animal
I will spend at least 30 minutes learning about a wild animal I find interesting, including their life cycle, habitat, ecosystem functions, and interactions with humans (if any!).
People
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 15 minute(s) each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside that follows CDC guidelines for preventing disease spread.
People
Connect While Social Distancing
I will connect with at least 2 person/people a day through phone call or video chat to support mine and other’s mental and emotional health during this challenging time.
Oceans
Smart Seafood Choices
I will visit seafoodwatch.org or download the app and commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean.
Oceans
Learn about Our Oceans
I will spend at least 30 minutes learning about how our oceans support life on Earth by producing oxygen, regulating climate, and providing habitat, food, and jobs.
Oceans
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When marine wildlife ingest plastic, they have a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 2 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Forests
Forest-Friendly Foods
I will replace or remove the palm oil, coffee, and cocoa products in my current diet that are known to contribute to deforestation.
Forests
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area while following CDC guidelines for social distancing.
Participant Feed

REFLECTION QUESTIONOceans Learn about Our OceansWhat is one way in which oceans support your life on Earth? What is one way you can help take care of ocean health with your actions?
Tianni Pierner 4/01/2020 2:28 PMOne way the oceans support my life on Earth is providing me oxygen to breathe. Oceans make up 70% of the oxygen produced. A way I can help the ocean is my being responsible of my trash by going zero-waste. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONForests Explore My AreaHow can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place?
Tianni Pierner 4/01/2020 2:24 PMThere's the riverwalk in Columbia, Saluda Shoals in Irmo (although this costs $5 to enter the park but it's worth it), and there's the Congaree Park that has amazing wildlife and fun trails! Lately I've been going to the riverwalk in Columbia and I saw 2 GIANT beavers. I didn't realize that beavers lived on the Columbia River! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONOceans Say No to Plastic StrawsWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Tianni Pierner 4/01/2020 2:22 PMI have metal straws (4) for my home as well as travel silicon straws (2) for when I'm out at about. I love all my straws! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPeople Connect While Social DistancingHow does connecting with others help your own mental and emotional health? How can it help support others?
Tianni Pierner 4/01/2020 2:15 PMThe past week I have been facetiming friends and it's helped me stay in contact them and not feel so lonely. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPeople Spend Time OutsideRachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?
Tianni Pierner 4/01/2020 2:15 PMSpending time outside, especially when we are highly encouraged to stay indoors and not be out in public, makes me feel productive and happy. Being outdoors allows me to exercise and not feel so cramped.
