Climate

waste no food or leftovers

worldwide, and estimated 1/3 of the food produced goes to waste, the equivalent of about 1.3 tons. But it's not about the food, it's about the process it took to get it onto your plate. Every scrap of food goes through the same cycle, production, processing, distribution, retail, and consumption, and all of those stages lead to disposal. Not only is the energy used in those cycles damaging to our planet, but also the food that gets dumped in landfills, producing methane, a very potent greenhouse gas. In my house we typically end up with a lot of leftovers that end up going to waste. My goal is to eat up the leftovers first, and when I do cook new meals, they will be in smaller, more rational quantities.

I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 1 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.

Wildlife

Use Reusable Bags

Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals. If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Wildlife Use Reusable Bags
What do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?

I typically don't find myself in that situation because my family always has at least one or two reusable bags in our trunk. But if we forget them in the car or for some reason we don't have any with us we usually try to carry our items in our hands. If we need bags for a large trip to the store and forgot our bags from home then we will use one or two paper bags, packing them as tight as possible. When we get home, we will find an alternative use for them instead of being recycled right away.
