I've enjoyed talking with the neighbors across the road and over the fence. It brightens the day.

Action Track: Building Resilience
Support A Sharing Economy
To reduce my consumption and waste and support my community, I will create or support a sharing economy with family, friends, and neighbors.
Food
Weekly Meal Planning
I will reduce food waste and save money by prepping for 2 meal(s) each day, only buying the ingredients I need.
Forests
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area while following CDC guidelines for social distancing.
People
Connect While Social Distancing
I will connect with at least 1 person/people a day through phone call or video chat to support mine and other’s mental and emotional health during this challenging time.
People
Take steps to get composting in all of Clark County
People generate too much waste that goes to landfill when it doesn't have to. I will spend 8 hours researching the existing programs in Portland and the City of Vancouver and reach out to city and country government and service providers to help move the country towards composting.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONPeople Connect While Social DistancingHow does connecting with others help your own mental and emotional health? How can it help support others?
Rebecca Roberts 4/30/2020 3:03 PMTalking with my mom is uplifting. Talking with my sister can be draining, but I know it helps her, so that is good. :)
I've enjoyed talking with the neighbors across the road and over the fence. It brightens the day. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONForests Explore My AreaHow can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place?
Rebecca Roberts 4/30/2020 3:02 PMI explored a lot of trails, but most of them I already go on. Getting out to new locations was not really an option for me this year. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Weekly Meal PlanningAn average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Does this surprise you? Where would you rather use this money?
Rebecca Roberts 4/30/2020 3:01 PMThis doesn't surprise me at all. I'm guilty of doing this. I wish I had chickens I could give some of it to or at least compost it. Doesn't make it better, but it would at least help. I've tried to decrease my waste, but sometimes that spinach just gets stuck in the back of the drawer and goes bad. I am getting better though. I've noticed that since we don't go out to eat anymore, I keep better track of what is in the fridge and actually eat what I plan to eat. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Support A Sharing EconomyWhat are the benefits of a sharing economy? How could a sharing economy change the dynamics you have with friends, family and/or neighbors?
Rebecca Roberts 4/30/2020 2:58 PMFirst, so much is sitting unused and sharing or giving away of your unused items to someone who needs and will use them is a fantastic way to keep more coming in and making what already exists more useful. I love that! It also brings people together. I have connected more with people in my neighborhood and even the surrounding area. I was giving an old Traeger away for free. It had been given to me by my sister years ago and I've been meaning to clean it up and use it--I haven't done that. Someone said that they would take it and clean it up but not keep it. They would return it to me so I could finally use it. How generous of them to share their skills, tools and time. If I don't keep it, I will make sure I gift it to someone who needs it. -
Rebecca Roberts 4/30/2020 2:54 PMOne thing I have noticed is that quarantine and not being able to easily go to the store has increased the level of sharing in the neighborhood. I have people borrowing tools and books or needing an ingredient for something tasty. There has also been a lot of cleaning up of clutter and free giveaways to repurpose things to a place where they will be used. -
Rebecca Roberts 4/22/2020 4:32 PMGetting back to the basics on food and it tastes WONDERFUL!! Using up what I have because we don't opt to go out instead of eating what we planned.
Also gave away a bunch of really good things that we just didn't need anymore through a neighborhood "Buy Nothing" page. It felt so good! A new home for the items to put them to good use and more space for me to breathe. -
Rebecca Roberts 4/15/2020 4:20 PMI had a slow start, but I'm going to work on being better recording my actions. I hope to get to my big one time action before the month is over!
