    Wildlife Research Benefits of Biodiversity
How can you encourage biodiversity by your own actions?

I can do things such as allow the plants that would grow naturally in my yard to remain there, grow, and thrive without disrupting them. I can also eat mainly organic foods.

How difficult or easy was it to change your diet?

I think it will definitely be difficult to change my diet after learning that there are so many products that contain things like palm oil.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Forests Explore My Area
How can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place?

    Chloe Russell's avatar
    Chloe Russell 4/14/2020 8:14 AM
Spending time outdoors really helps you connect with your surroundings and I think its especially important during this time while we are social distancing because spending time in the outdoors is really the only safe way to get out of our houses.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Fresh Water Eco-friendly Gardening
What are the most prominent water concerns in your area? Examples include drought, flooding, pollution, access, security, and privatization.

In the area of my home, flooding has been a large problem for our house sits in the past. When we have large rainstorms, water usually comes up through the foundation of the basement and often ruins the wood floor. Flooding is also an issue in my area like in places close to the french broad river or places with lower elevation where a lot of water can get trapped.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Climate Stay on the Ground
What was your process like for restructuring your trip? How can you avoid more air travel in the future?

    Chloe Russell 4/12/2020 9:14 AM
It is not good to go through airports right now with Coronavirus and everything going on. My family and I go to Michigan to visit family every summer and we have always driven because it is a lot cheaper than flying so we will continue to do that as long as it is safe to travel there by the time we are supposed to leave.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Oceans Smart Seafood Choices
Many states and countries have advisories on eating fish. Find out what is advised for your region. Do you think your diet choices fall within these guidelines? What steps do you need to take to make sure that they do?

    Chloe Russell's avatar
    Chloe Russell 4/11/2020 10:11 AM
In Western North Carolina, it is advised that much freshwater fish are safe to eat. I feel like this somewhat falls within the guidelines of my diet choice but my family does occasionally buy seafood that comes from the ocean. I feel like my family and I should eat less seafood when in our own region and save it for when we are actually near the ocean and are able to eat it fresh so we can lower the demand a bit.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Fresh Water Dishwasher Efficiency
How can your region/household prepare for changing water situations in order to become more resilient?

    Chloe Russell's avatar
    Chloe Russell 4/11/2020 10:02 AM
We can work on things like doing less loads of laundry, taking shorter showers, or doing less loads in the dishwasher in order to adjust ourselves to the changing times in terms of water supply.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
How does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?

    Chloe Russell's avatar
    Chloe Russell 4/11/2020 10:00 AM
Knowing the difference between these will definitely help my family and I waste less food because we can know if the product is actually bad or not. Usually, the best by dates are set for a lot earlier than the product actually expires.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Building Resilience Spend Time Outside
Rachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?

    Chloe Russell's avatar
    Chloe Russell 4/11/2020 9:54 AM
This definitely rings true for me, especially around this time when we are all stuck in our houses and social distancing. I feel like spending time outside is really the only way to get out of the house right now and I always feel better after doing it.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Building Resilience Connect While Social Distancing
How does connecting with others help your own mental and emotional health? How can it help support others?

    Chloe Russell's avatar
    Chloe Russell 4/03/2020 11:19 AM
Connecting with others gives me some excitement while social distancing and helps my emotional and mental health because I am not used to being isolated and stuck with my family like this all of the time so it allows me to see new faces and talk to people and make me a little less bored. I think it can help others because everyone needs to be talking to each other about our feelings or emotions right now in order to stay in a stable mental state.
