Volunteer in my Community
I will volunteer 8 hour(s) in my community helping people who are most at need right now, including elderly and immunocompromised people, people without childcare, and people whose jobs have been affected by social distancing measures.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Use Muscle Power
I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips, and I will only use muscle-powered transportation for all other trips.
Food
Weekly Meal Planning
I will reduce food waste and save money by prepping for 1 meal(s) each day, only buying the ingredients I need.
Food
Reduce Animal Products
I will enjoy 1 meatless meal(s) and/or 1 vegan meal(s) each day of the challenge.
Oceans
Learn about Our Oceans
I will spend at least 5 minutes learning about how our oceans support life on Earth by producing oxygen, regulating climate, and providing habitat, food, and jobs.
Oceans
Smart Seafood Choices
I will visit seafoodwatch.org or download the app and commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean.

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Volunteer in my CommunityHow does volunteering enhance your community and/or change your relationship with it?
Crystal Sanderson 4/29/2020 4:08 PMIt definitely a good way to connect with your community and get to know people. I got an itch to volunteer while quarantined and was having difficulty figuring out how, but got connected to mentor architecture students from home. I likely will not start this until next month. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONOceans Smart Seafood ChoicesMany states and countries have advisories on eating fish. Find out what is advised for your region. Do you think your diet choices fall within these guidelines? What steps do you need to take to make sure that they do?
Crystal Sanderson 4/23/2020 11:37 AMI still haven't found the right tool with help with seafood selection. Seafood Watch only lists very high end grocery stores in their app which does not make this food accessible to everyone. Weirdly, they only list Red Lobster for sustainable seafood restaurants. Would like an app or website to give me more options. Its a little cumbersome to check seafood watch when planning meals and then buying fish. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Reduce Animal ProductsWhy do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?
Crystal Sanderson 4/23/2020 11:25 AMAt the WOHES Conference I had a session on sustainable food options from Default Veg, Factory Farming Awareness Coalition and SOU which was enlightening. There are so many issues with resource acquisition and allocation in wealthy countries. Making plant based options the default is such a good idea. Have started trying alternatives for dairy, like coconut milk my coffee instead of half and half which I love. Veggie cheese scares me. Not sure that I can go there. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Weekly Meal PlanningAn average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Does this surprise you? Where would you rather use this money?
Crystal Sanderson 4/23/2020 11:12 AMThis does not surprise me. We have struggled with this and still do, but have found the app mealime which helps me plan meals ahead and has helped with waste. Have been using it for the last few months and have actually stuck with it. It keeps me from getting bored with my own cooking and organizes my grocery list which is key. I also just downloaded one called Tasty which appears to be a little more fun and less healthy, but I assume will still improve the waste situation. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Use Muscle PowerHow do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience or enjoyment differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?
Crystal Sanderson 4/23/2020 10:04 AMAbsolutely! My dog needs walks everyday and it benefits us both to experience the outdoors. There are people I see and chat with on a somewhat regular basis while walking the dog which is really nice.
