  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    People Spend Time Outside
Rachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?

I always feel happier when I’m outside, especially in good weather, so the natural world definitely is needed for my better spiritual and emotional development. A culture that spends most of its time outdoors would have a much better connection with their community and I think would just overall be in much happier spirits.

What would a sustainable water future in your region look like? What needs to change?

I think what needs to change is the overall water use in our homes, form watering grass to long showers, if the community of Santa Barbara really tried hard to cut down on as much water as possible we could avoid a major drought like the one of our past. I think a sustainable water future in my region would look like more homes with turf grass as their lawn and people being extremely mindful of water use in their kitchen, for example.

How does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?

The act of picking up litter connects me more to my community because I want to make my community better, and by making it cleaner allows me to make this connection.

How does connecting with others help your own mental and emotional health? How can it help support others?

Connecting with others helps my mental and emotional health because it allows me to talk with friends and family members about what’s going on in their life especially because I have not been able to see them during quarantine. It can help support others if they are going through tough times and need someone to discuss their problems with.
