Sarahbeth's actions
Fresh Water
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 3 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 30 minute(s) each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside that follows CDC guidelines for preventing disease spread.
Oceans
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When marine wildlife ingest plastic, they have a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 3 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Sarahbeth Simonson 4/14/2020 3:48 PMMy husband and I have been enjoying our morning coffee on the back deck. It is great to have this calm time to start our day together with nature.-

REFLECTION QUESTIONOceans Say No to Plastic StrawsWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Sarahbeth Simonson 4/14/2020 3:45 PMI stopped using single use straws for my weekly smoothie breakfasts for the family. This has helped eliminate at least 6 - 12 disposable straws a week. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFresh Water Use a Reusable Water BottleUsing the links provided, investigate the bottling practices of water corporations. There have been many cases where the water rights of the local people have been violated or even completely disregarded when a corporation decides to bottle water from a particular water source. How can you advocate for those who have been harmed - both humans and wildlife - by this bottling process?
Sarahbeth Simonson 4/14/2020 3:44 PMI can advocate for those suffering the consequences of my convenience by shifting my perspective and using fewer of the disposable products that impact others in such a devastating way.-
Jeanne Poirier 4/14/2020 8:34 PMEvery time my hand reaches for something on the shelf, or to have - would be great to honor your advocacy. Wish we could really know the impact of our purchasing power!

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Spend Time OutsideRachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?
Sarahbeth Simonson 4/14/2020 3:43 PMYes, I too believe we need to interact with the natural wonders around us. Those that do not connect with their natural environment will become sickly in spirit and body.
