Climate

Stay on the Ground

Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Fresh Water

Dishwasher Efficiency

I will scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading into the dishwasher and only run the dishwasher when it’s full.

Learn about Our Oceans

I will spend at least 60 minutes learning about how our oceans support life on Earth by producing oxygen, regulating climate, and providing habitat, food, and jobs.

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

I have already done my first hour commitment to learning about our oceans, but now get an added hour thanks to David Attenborough and Planet Earth: Blue Planet II.  WOW!  So amazing, with countless unknowns!

I am kind of mixed on my water challenge.  While I am scraping my plates before I put them in the dishwasher, I am a little worried how dirty it might make my dishwasher to not rinse them off a little bit.

How can your region/household prepare for changing water situations in order to become more resilient?

These are all big questions, as we face this on-going drought.  I have a yard and garden that will require water soon, but I will try to use it sparingly.  One thing that I do is collect water from my shower while the water is heating up.  I use that to water my plants.  It is amazing how many buckets would otherwise be going down the drain if I did not have this practice in my life.  I first adopted this practice during an EcoChallenge years ago, so I am happy to report that the EcoChallenge experience can have lasting effects on our habits!  Yay, team!

What was your process like for restructuring your trip? How can you avoid more air travel in the future?

While I was rather forced into this decision, given the cancellation of this conference, I have been doing my best to support UNESCO's efforts with alternative ways to launch their new ESD for 2030 decade with online media campaigns and introductions to change agents.
