Clara's actions
Action Track: Building Resilience
Connect While Social Distancing
I will connect with at least 2 person/people a day through phone call or video chat to support mine and other’s mental and emotional health during this challenging time.
People
Register for Earth Day
I will register for a FREE ticket to attend the virtual St. Louis Earth Day Festival which spans from April 18-26, 2020, in order to gain access to daily live content and links that highlight the amazing work in our community that are paving way for a more sustainable future.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Use Muscle Power
I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips, and I will only use muscle-powered transportation for all other trips.
Climate
Stay on the Ground
Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).
Food
Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
I will watch 2 documentary(ies) about food sovereignty: the right of local peoples to control their own food systems including markets, ecological resources, food cultures and production methods.
People
Volunteer in my Community
I will volunteer 5 hour(s) in my community helping people who are most at need right now, including elderly and immunocompromised people, people without childcare, and people whose jobs have been affected by social distancing measures.
Oceans
Smart Seafood Choices
I will visit seafoodwatch.org or download the app and commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean.
Oceans
Join a Cleanup Effort
I will host or participate in a trash pickup at a local river or beach that follows the CDC’s current guidelines for prevention of disease transfer.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Support A Sharing Economy
To reduce my consumption and waste and support my community, I will create or support a sharing economy with family, friends, and neighbors.
Wildlife
Research a Wild Animal
I will spend at least 20 minutes learning about a wild animal I find interesting, including their life cycle, habitat, ecosystem functions, and interactions with humans (if any!).
People
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 5 piece(s) of litter each day while following the CDC’s current guidelines for prevention of disease transfer.
Food
Reduce Animal Products
I will enjoy 2 meatless meal(s) and/or 1 vegan meal(s) each day of the challenge.
Food
Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
I will spend at least 15 minutes learning how to differentiate between sell by, use by, and best by dates.
Forests
Forest-Friendly Foods
I will replace or remove the palm oil, coffee, and cocoa products in my current diet that are known to contribute to deforestation.
Action Track: Earth Day Together!
Earth Day Action: Share Eco Tips
Through social media or on the Earth Day Ecochallenge feed, I will share my favorite environmentally friendly habit with my friends, even if it’s not an Earth Day action.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building ResilienceHow do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience or enjoyment differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?
Clara Steyer 4/20/2020 4:52 PMI drive rarely but when I do, I feel very disconnected from the environment I'm traveling through. I also feel like when driving, one is more susceptible to getting angry or aggressive. I'm so happy to see much more people walking, biking, and running these days, which fosters connections between neighbors and communities, improve the air quality, and the overall public health! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodHow does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?
Clara Steyer 4/09/2020 6:14 PMNow I know that I should trust my own judgement in regards to if a food is safe to eat or not based on spoilage and smell, Even the USDA acknowledges that use by/sell by/best by dates are confusing the customer and leading to unnecessary food waste:
"Confusion over the meaning of dates applied to food products can result in consumers discarding wholesome food." -
REFLECTION QUESTIONOceansMany states and countries have advisories on eating fish. Find out what is advised for your region. Do you think your diet choices fall within these guidelines? What steps do you need to take to make sure that they do?
Clara Steyer 4/08/2020 7:02 AMI'm really impressed to see all these resources to inform people about their fish and seafood choices. Not only they make it easy to chose sustainably sourced products, but they also recommend healthy servings (size and frequency). The Seafood Watch app is absolutely wonderful, I highly recommend it! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building ResilienceWhat are the benefits of a sharing economy? How could a sharing economy change the dynamics you have with friends, family and/or neighbors?
Clara Steyer 4/03/2020 2:52 PMThink of all the things we own but only use a few times a year. Sharing these things we only use occasionally optimize the energy it took to produce them, reduce our need to consume, and prevent waste! Instead of each household in a street owning their own lawn mower, doesn't it make so much more sense to just have one for everyone to share? It's also so much more fun and social. Once we start sharing, we increase solidarity, we support each other, and we start thinking as a community rather than an individual.

Clara Steyer 4/01/2020 3:34 PMNot sure how to support a sharing economy on a daily basis but today I gave a bunch of my homegrown walking onions with my neighbors! -
Clara Steyer 3/30/2020 4:00 PMToday would have been the start of the WashU Earth Week, I'm grateful we have the Earth Week Ecochallenge to keep us connected and engaged virtually! So, happy Earth Week everyone, and get ready to start taking and completing actions this Wednesday, April 1 :)
