Samantha's actions

Oceans

Say No to Plastic Straws

An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When marine wildlife ingest plastic, they have a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 4 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Wildlife Research a Wild Animal
What interesting facts did you learn about the animal you researched? What are some of your favorite things about this animal?

    Samantha Streeter's avatar
    Samantha Streeter 4/21/2020 6:39 PM
I researched the Florida panther and I found out that they are a very endangered species that has little to none of the species remaining on earth and that a lot of people don't put any thought towards those types of animals.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    People Spend Time Outside
Rachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?

    Samantha Streeter's avatar
    Samantha Streeter 4/21/2020 6:38 PM
I believe that nature being in a different sense of calm into our lives that is much needed in daily life. Being able to go outside and relax can honestly change someone's day.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    People Connect While Social Distancing
How does connecting with others help your own mental and emotional health? How can it help support others?

    Samantha Streeter's avatar
    Samantha Streeter 4/21/2020 6:37 PM
Especially in a time like today, social interaction is the key to growth in my perspective. I need a team to help me stay motivated and stay on track so whenever I doubt myself I can always get right back up.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Oceans Say No to Plastic Straws
What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

    Samantha Streeter's avatar
    Samantha Streeter 4/21/2020 6:36 PM
I use plastic bags on a daily basis and I could definitely limit the amount of bags I use by just taking a few reusable bags into the store to save some plastic or recycling the bags I do have.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Oceans Smart Seafood Choices
Many states and countries have advisories on eating fish. Find out what is advised for your region. Do you think your diet choices fall within these guidelines? What steps do you need to take to make sure that they do?

    Samantha Streeter's avatar
    Samantha Streeter 4/21/2020 6:35 PM
I don't normally eat a lot of fish so it personally wouldn't affect my diet too much because I could just limit the amount of fish that I'm intaking.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Oceans Advocate For More Packaging Options
What concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.

    Samantha Streeter's avatar
    Samantha Streeter 4/21/2020 6:34 PM
On a local aspect, I believe that we do a terrible job picking up trash. There is a lot of trash that I see around my neighborhood that can be limited. When on a global standard, I believe we are conducting too many greenhouse gases.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Oceans Support Organic Growing Methods
It is often said that “you can’t feed the world with just organic food.” What is your response to that statement?

    Samantha Streeter's avatar
    Samantha Streeter 4/21/2020 6:29 PM
I believe that it is a lot healthier when it comes to organic food, but there are so many people in the world who don't care about the organic aspect and more the economic standpoint on it.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Oceans Learn about Our Oceans
What is one way in which oceans support your life on Earth? What is one way you can help take care of ocean health with your actions?

    Samantha Streeter's avatar
    Samantha Streeter 4/21/2020 6:28 PM
Oceans support my life by having an environment for the animals that I consume on a daily basis. I don't grow without food and that is what keeps me living.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Fresh Water Eco-friendly Gardening
What are the most prominent water concerns in your area? Examples include drought, flooding, pollution, access, security, and privatization.

    Samantha Streeter's avatar
    Samantha Streeter 4/21/2020 6:27 PM
Due to the weather conditions in Florida lately, I think that we more have to worry about drought because we have not been getting any rainfall in the past few weeks, and Florida is known as one of the wettest states.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Fresh Water Dishwasher Efficiency
How can your region/household prepare for changing water situations in order to become more resilient?

    Samantha Streeter's avatar
    Samantha Streeter 4/21/2020 6:26 PM
I believe we can more transition into cleaning with using less water which overall helps conserving water, which ultimately leads to a cleaner planet.
