Samantha's actions
Oceans
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When marine wildlife ingest plastic, they have a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 4 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Climate
Stay on the Ground
Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).
Fresh Water
Dishwasher Efficiency
I will scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading into the dishwasher and only run the dishwasher when it’s full.
Oceans
Support Organic Growing Methods
I will buy organic cotton and foods grown without the use of synthetic nitrogen fertilizers.
People
Connect While Social Distancing
I will connect with at least 1 person/people a day through phone call or video chat to support mine and other’s mental and emotional health during this challenging time.
People
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 15 minute(s) each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside that follows CDC guidelines for preventing disease spread.
Food
Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
I will watch 1 documentary(ies) about food sovereignty: the right of local peoples to control their own food systems including markets, ecological resources, food cultures and production methods.
Climate
Choose LED Bulbs
I will replace 1 incandescent lightbulb(s) with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
Oceans
Advocate For More Packaging Options
Plastic packaging can clog our water ways and the stomachs of sea creatures. I will advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, markets, at work, or on campus.
Wildlife
Research a Wild Animal
I will spend at least 15 minutes learning about a wild animal I find interesting, including their life cycle, habitat, ecosystem functions, and interactions with humans (if any!).
Fresh Water
Eco-friendly Gardening
I will plant native species, landscape with water-efficient plants, and use eco-friendly fertilizers.
Climate
Earth Day Action: Write a Love Letter, Poem, or Song to Earth
I will express my love and gratitude for our Earth by writing a love letter, poem, or song to Earth.
Forests
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area while following CDC guidelines for social distancing.
Oceans
Smart Seafood Choices
I will visit seafoodwatch.org or download the app and commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean.
Oceans
Learn about Our Oceans
I will spend at least 10 minutes learning about how our oceans support life on Earth by producing oxygen, regulating climate, and providing habitat, food, and jobs.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlife Research a Wild AnimalWhat interesting facts did you learn about the animal you researched? What are some of your favorite things about this animal?
Samantha Streeter 4/21/2020 6:39 PMI researched the Florida panther and I found out that they are a very endangered species that has little to none of the species remaining on earth and that a lot of people don't put any thought towards those types of animals. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPeople Spend Time OutsideRachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?
Samantha Streeter 4/21/2020 6:38 PMI believe that nature being in a different sense of calm into our lives that is much needed in daily life. Being able to go outside and relax can honestly change someone's day. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPeople Connect While Social DistancingHow does connecting with others help your own mental and emotional health? How can it help support others?
Samantha Streeter 4/21/2020 6:37 PMEspecially in a time like today, social interaction is the key to growth in my perspective. I need a team to help me stay motivated and stay on track so whenever I doubt myself I can always get right back up. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONOceans Say No to Plastic StrawsWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Samantha Streeter 4/21/2020 6:36 PMI use plastic bags on a daily basis and I could definitely limit the amount of bags I use by just taking a few reusable bags into the store to save some plastic or recycling the bags I do have. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONOceans Smart Seafood ChoicesMany states and countries have advisories on eating fish. Find out what is advised for your region. Do you think your diet choices fall within these guidelines? What steps do you need to take to make sure that they do?
Samantha Streeter 4/21/2020 6:35 PMI don't normally eat a lot of fish so it personally wouldn't affect my diet too much because I could just limit the amount of fish that I'm intaking. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONOceans Advocate For More Packaging OptionsWhat concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.
Samantha Streeter 4/21/2020 6:34 PMOn a local aspect, I believe that we do a terrible job picking up trash. There is a lot of trash that I see around my neighborhood that can be limited. When on a global standard, I believe we are conducting too many greenhouse gases. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONOceans Support Organic Growing MethodsIt is often said that “you can’t feed the world with just organic food.” What is your response to that statement?
Samantha Streeter 4/21/2020 6:29 PMI believe that it is a lot healthier when it comes to organic food, but there are so many people in the world who don't care about the organic aspect and more the economic standpoint on it. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONOceans Learn about Our OceansWhat is one way in which oceans support your life on Earth? What is one way you can help take care of ocean health with your actions?
Samantha Streeter 4/21/2020 6:28 PMOceans support my life by having an environment for the animals that I consume on a daily basis. I don't grow without food and that is what keeps me living. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFresh Water Eco-friendly GardeningWhat are the most prominent water concerns in your area? Examples include drought, flooding, pollution, access, security, and privatization.
Samantha Streeter 4/21/2020 6:27 PMDue to the weather conditions in Florida lately, I think that we more have to worry about drought because we have not been getting any rainfall in the past few weeks, and Florida is known as one of the wettest states. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFresh Water Dishwasher EfficiencyHow can your region/household prepare for changing water situations in order to become more resilient?
Samantha Streeter 4/21/2020 6:26 PMI believe we can more transition into cleaning with using less water which overall helps conserving water, which ultimately leads to a cleaner planet.
