Action Track: Earth Day Together! Earth Day Action: Research and Support Local Organizations
Why is it important to support local organizations and businesses? How does it help to build a more resilient community?

It is very important to support local organizations and businesses especially at this time because with the closings of several things and only curbisde pickup, those businesses lose a lot of business which can really hurt them. Independent organizations/businesses are having to fully rely on their own profits unlike big businesses who are getting all the money right now.  This is why we need to shop local as much as we can, order from local restaurants, and donate or give our time to local organizations.

    Forests Forest-Friendly Foods
How difficult or easy was it to change your diet?

    Hayden Strickler's avatar
    Hayden Strickler 4/17/2020 11:06 AM
It was a bit difficult since some of the products that contain palm oil, and cocoa, or dairy/eggs I already had at my home but having learned more about the harm that they do, I can try my best to change the way I buy and to eat as least of these products as possible.

    Wildlife Use Reusable Bags
What do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?

It is hard to remember everything all the time. When you forget to bring your reusable grocery bag while running errands, you can still help the environment by maybe finding a big box or trying to carry everything by hand. To avoid the risk of forgetting things can be to maybe have on at home and one that you keep in the car or something similar so you can still follow through with sustainable practices.

How can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place?

Spending more time outside helps enhance your sense of place because there are both mental and physical benefits for just talking a short walk outside. Walks and hikes make us feel more free instead of being inside and in front of screens all day.

    Oceans Learn about Our Oceans
What is one way in which oceans support your life on Earth? What is one way you can help take care of ocean health with your actions?

One way that oceans benefit life on earth is the oxygen that they produce. I learned that the ocean produces over half of Earth’s oxygen and absorbs a lot of carbon dioxide. We can protect the ocean by using less plastic products that could be dumped into the ocean and hurt the animals. We can also advocate to keep it free from contaminates and oil.

Food Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
How does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?

    Hayden Strickler's avatar
    Hayden Strickler 4/04/2020 8:24 PM
By knowing the difference, we can reduce the amount of food that we waste. I learned that you can still eat food after the “use by” date because the “use by” date is not the same as a safety date so it is still safe to eat. If you don’t eat it or feel comfortable eating it, do not throw it away, it can be donated to charity.

Action Track: Building Resilience Spend Time Outside
Rachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?

    Hayden Strickler 4/03/2020 8:10 PM
This seems very true to me. I love being outside because it is very calming and relaxing to take in the sun. I have heard that people who spend more time outside are usually happier.

How can you encourage biodiversity by your own actions?

    Hayden Strickler 4/02/2020 5:47 PM
There are several easy things that we can do to encourage and not harm biodiversity. We can support organizations that protect species like bees. We can also do practices to leave the least carbon footprint that we can because climate change has a very negative affect on biodiversity. We

Fresh Water Use a Reusable Water Bottle
Using the links provided, investigate the bottling practices of water corporations. There have been many cases where the water rights of the local people have been violated or even completely disregarded when a corporation decides to bottle water from a particular water source. How can you advocate for those who have been harmed - both humans and wildlife - by this bottling process?

    Hayden Strickler's avatar
    Hayden Strickler 4/01/2020 7:36 PM
You can advocate by first, not buying any bottle water and simply using a reusable water bottle. Another thing to get people to use less plastic water bottles is to demand clean water for all so that EVERYONE can use tap water and not invest in an industry that drills for oil and pollutes the air.
