Meredith's actions
Wildlife
Research a Wild Animal
I will spend at least 20 minutes learning about a wild animal I find interesting, including their life cycle, habitat, ecosystem functions, and interactions with humans (if any!).
Wildlife
Research Benefits of Biodiversity
I will spend at least 20 minutes researching how biodiversity positively impacts our world and how the loss of biodiversity harms it.
Climate
Stay on the Ground
Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).
Climate
Choose Renewable Energy or Purchase Renewable Energy Credits
I will sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option. If my utility does not offer one, I will purchase Renewable Energy Credits to match my usage.
Food
Reduce Animal Products
I will enjoy 1 meatless meal(s) and/or 1 vegan meal(s) each day of the challenge.
Fresh Water
Conserve Toilet Water
I will save up to 12 gallons (45 L) of water a day by flushing only when necessary.
Fresh Water
Dishwasher Efficiency
I will scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading into the dishwasher and only run the dishwasher when it’s full.
Fresh Water
Get Involved in the Water Justice Movement
I will spend at least 5 minutes a day using the resources provided to learn about water justice and find out how I can get involved in local initiatives.
Food
Compost Food Waste
I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to the landfill each day by composting my food or learning how to.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Meredith Sullivan 4/21/2020 1:28 PMToday being Earth Day and is great chance to revisit what we are doing and how we can improve our daily habits to better support the health of this planet. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlife Research Benefits of BiodiversityHow can you encourage biodiversity by your own actions?
Meredith Sullivan 4/21/2020 1:26 PMPlant a diverse garden - this will help it be more resistant to pests. Also flowering trees will attract pollinators which will help the garden. Perhaps convert part of a grass lawn to be more diverse by using flowers and trees. Learn more about the 'weeds' growing in the yard as some can deter pests and others are edible. Buy local fruits and vegetables and visit farmers markets. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate Stay on the GroundWhat was your process like for restructuring your trip? How can you avoid more air travel in the future?
Meredith Sullivan 4/21/2020 1:18 PMMore pandemics? Not so much voluntary but it has allowed me time to do further research and learn more about the country. I still hope to visit one day! I learned about the formation of Ha Long Bay which dates back over 500 million years! -
Meredith Sullivan 4/14/2020 6:31 AMI missed checking in for a few days. Need to get back on track :-) -
Meredith Sullivan 4/08/2020 1:22 PMMany of these things are what I do in my everyday life. Going to push myself in the same half to learn some new things and do some of the one time challenges! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFresh Water Dishwasher EfficiencyHow can your region/household prepare for changing water situations in order to become more resilient?
Meredith Sullivan 4/07/2020 11:44 AMTo ensure the resilience of our water supply we need to think about restoration, management, and conservation of existing water supplies. We need to start this now and not years from now when it is an urgent issue. Community planning and involvement will help to develop solutions and solicit buy in from those affected -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFresh Water Conserve Toilet WaterWhat would a sustainable water future in your region look like? What needs to change?
Meredith Sullivan 4/07/2020 11:37 AMit is predicted that by 2020 about 30-40% of the world will have water scarcity, and according to the researchers, climate change can make this even worse. We need to think more creatively about harvesting and storing rainwater and using gray water for some functions to reduce our overall dependency on fresh water supplies. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Compost Food WasteNew to composting? Be sure to check out the action resource links to learn tips and more about it. As you transition from throwing food away to composting, what do you notice about how much you are tossing? How will you use your compost once it is ready?
Meredith Sullivan 4/03/2020 10:23 AMI've been using Compost Crew for about 3 years now! I have a 5 gallon bucket that is picked up weekly. I only put my trash can out for pickup every 4-6 weeks now. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Reduce Animal ProductsWhy do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?
Meredith Sullivan 4/03/2020 10:10 AMI have limited my meat consumption over the years because of the detrimental environmental impacts. I think in this country eating meat is seen as a status symbol because it tends to be more expensive (i.e. fancy steakhouses!) -
