Hailey's actions
Food
Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
I will watch 2 documentary(ies) about food sovereignty: the right of local peoples to control their own food systems including markets, ecological resources, food cultures and production methods.
Wildlife
Research a Wild Animal
I will spend at least 30 minutes learning about a wild animal I find interesting, including their life cycle, habitat, ecosystem functions, and interactions with humans (if any!).
Action Track: Building Resilience
Support Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators, including monarch butterflies, to produce fruit. I will spend 30 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.
Climate
Use Public Transit
If a necessary trip is longer than I can walk or bike, I will use public transit 1 mile(s) each day and avoid sending up to (___) lbs of CO2 into Earth's atmosphere, while being sure to follow CDC guidelines for prevention of disease infection or transfer.
Climate
Local Climate Issues
I will spend at least 10 minute(s) a day researching climate issues or climate solutions in my local area and share with others through my team feed, social media, or conversations with my peers.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 10 minute(s) each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside that follows CDC guidelines for preventing disease spread.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlife Research a Wild AnimalWhat interesting facts did you learn about the animal you researched? What are some of your favorite things about this animal?
Hailey Swain 4/21/2020 1:03 PMSnails. Gastropoda. All internal organs of the snail are in it's shell. They help moss reproduce & diversify by picking up spores from the moss with their sticky trail and dispersing it to other areas of the forest. They've been around up to 600 million years. They're decomposers of plant material and fungi, it passes through them and adds goodness to the soil. When they hatch, they're "shells" are squishy, so they eat their egg shells to gain the calcium. Here's a timelapse of a baby in action https://i.imgur.com/dNDTKHY.gifv

Hailey Swain 4/13/2020 12:58 PMI enjoy the concept of the challenge and thing it's super important and fun for folks to be involved in! Personally I'm having a hard time remembering to check in and I don't access my computer every day. I wish there was an app! I also have found I already do a lot of the challenges which is cool and the ones I chose are things I've been meaning to do! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Spend Time OutsideRachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?
Hailey Swain 4/13/2020 12:25 PMI agree that being outside is fundamental for our development which without comes a sense of something missing when everything seems to be there. I go outside for clarity and to remember what truly matters; what we all depend on. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Support PollinatorsWhy is it important to take care of pollinators?
Hailey Swain 4/12/2020 6:13 PMPollinators are life. They give us our food, control ecosystems and prevent collapse, and provide beautiful flowers. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate Local Climate IssuesIn what ways is your local community resilient to shock events like we’ve experienced recently? How could you help it become more resilient?
Hailey Swain 4/07/2020 4:34 PMI've noticed that the best way to get through shock events like this is a balance of nurturing the community around us and ourselves inside. It's important to go through all the motions of inner emotions and thoughts. It's important to cling to the positives and give support to people around us. Our suffering is interconnected. We've been through it before and we can do it over as many times as need be. Each time of hardship there is a little more to learn, that much more to grow, and that much more resilience built. The combined strength after and through hardships of many people is immensely powerful. Together we are capable of everything. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate Use Public TransitHow has your access to various kinds of transportation throughout your life influenced your current attitudes about transportation and your transportation behavior?
Hailey Swain 4/01/2020 11:22 PMSociety tends to apply pressure to traditionally learn to drive and purchase a car as the main mode of transportation, and while for some it is necessary, I feel like there are more altogether pros to lessening or diminishing car use. I recently started biking everywhere I need to go and it makes me feel awesome with the exercise, focus, and scenic view while lowering my impact and dependence with fossil fuels.
